Array Real Weapon As some of you might know I have been looking into buying a real sword and fitting a pistol grip on it as a self defence weapon in the home since I detest guns. Well here is it is the Italian stiletto. http://www.arco-iris.com/George/images/stiletto_01.jpg -

Array A pistol grip on that? Meh, whatever works for you. Personally, I think a samurai sword would be more intimidating, though if it comes to a point where you'd actually have to use it to survive, having a familiar weapon would be the best course of action. Though for self defense purposes, wouldn't a broken epee with a filed tip be just as effective? -

Array I dont have any broken Epees and I don't want anything with flex even if its a little.. If someone breaks into my house I am not interested in intimidating or scaring them. What I intend to do is put my blade through their throat. -

Array Why don't you use a hatchet or an axe or a machete? I am he

Because I'm not trained in those weapons nor am I a redneck or Mexican.
Btw, I watched a travel show that went to NZ. I have to say its really beautiful. I am planning to go there for 2 weeks and feast on Yabbi and other seafood that I can't get in America.
Tell me what your home is like please. Do you live in Auckland or a a small town? How many people? What is is like? How many generation have you been in NZ And why did your family end up there? -

Odds are the sword is going to be different from what you're used to. The blade would probably be heavier, and the balance wouldn't match that of a fencing sword. If you're going to use the style you were trained with, then use the weapon you were trained with. You can get a foil or epee with a stiff blade, and if you file the tip, it'd be just as deadly. -

Array Probably but I want something with an edge too just in case I have to slice. -

Doesn't say much in your profile. -

Slicing would definetly discourage a burglar, though a stiletto probably won't have that much cutting power if that picture is any indication. You could achieve the same effect with a filed down blade. -

Why don't you make one for yourself and leave me alone! -

Array You'll probably get more finger control if you stick with the handle shown here. A pistol grip, while providing you with the power to puncture someone's throat, will severely limit your finer motor control. This isn't a foil, after all.
As for the weapon itself, it's pretty, but it's also pretty short. You'd have to be very close to your intruder to make this work. This would be better for stabbing someone you already know - say, a house guest who insulted your wife's cooking or your honor. For an intruder, you want the element of surprise on your side, and a decent distance from the opponent. But since it's actually in your home, depending on the layout of the rooms, you might not have the space needed to swing a longsword.
How about a spear? They're sharp, can be used to poke rather than slash, and can be thrown with a good deal of accuracy. -

Array A straight-bladed ninja-style sword is probably your best bet. Well balanced, much better thrusting weapon than the samurai sword, and with a full-length blade for slicing if you have room to slash in. Long enough to keep you out of distance of a knife or machete wielding assailant, but of course no good against a gun. Can also be controlled with one hand or two, giving you more fighting flexibility in uncertain situations than a dedicated one-handed weapon.
You can buy fully-sharpened, combat-ready blades online at several decent stores. Just because you have the right, that doesn't mean it is right. -

No no! Something bigger and heavier, to rip an enemy's head clear off. http://guidesmedia.ign.com/guides/494/char/cloud.gif The sweet is never sweet without the sour. -
