    Computer Viruses

Ok for starters please don't be a jerk and steal this thread just for the heck of it, I really want to get this virus thing fixed and that obviously wont help it.

    Basic outline:
My laptop has a Trojan.Vundo.B virus on it. Its been there for about two months but just showed up on my virus scanner. We've tried to delete it in all of the usual ways and nothing works, we've even gone to the virus scanner website and looked at what they recommend, didn't do anything. It's buried in Windows and is making a home there.

Has anyone delt with this virus or know any obscure ways (besides rebuilding the computer which we're already considering) to get rid of it?

I have adaware, symantec, and all that stuff and none of it works to take it off, we've tried taking it off in safe mode too, that doesn't work.

Any help would ne nice, thanks guys.

Hmm... it's old, but it looks like it's kind of tricky to remove.

If you've tried Symantec's instructions with no luck, have you tried NAI (McAfee)? The link to their entry on that particular trojan is here:

    http://uk.mcafee.com/virusInfo/defau...virus_k=127690

They have a set of instructions for removal at the end of the page, but yeah - doesn't look like the virus scanner can do it by itself...

    Here you go:

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

That is a link to the removal tool. I know it is Norton but it should work. Good luck.

You could try backing up everything that isn't infected, your vital data and such, and then reformatting. Some viruses are able to avoid getting deleted in that way, so be sure to install that anti-virus program right after you re-install your OS and do another scan just to be sure. That's probably the measure of last resort, though. But if nothing else works, give it a try.

This thing is so deeply rooted its not even remotely humorous anymore.

Yes I've tried everything symantec, that didn't work.

ThatReally, We did try part of what they say to download but not the way they recommend it so I'll try that way tomorrow.

Tried the Removal Tool as well.

I'm afraid I may HAVE to redo the whole computer which will bit the Huge one.

Please any other suggestings would be fantastic!! I'll take as many as I can get. We went through about 4 or 5 at least tonight alone and we'll probably keep at it each night until its gone or until we side to just reformat. So as many as possible if you please.

In these situations I direct unfortunate souls to those more knowledgeable than myself:

    The Majorgeeks!

They can be very helpful, if you follow the rules (they get a little mean if you don't, or, at worst, they'll ignore you completely).

Head over to the Spyware Specific forum (which, contrary to its name, also deals with Trojans and other assorted digital nasties) and read the STICKY threads "READ & RUN ME FIRST before asking for support" and "NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting".

Hopefully you'll get picked up by bjgarrick. He's the nicest Alabamian I know of!

    Goodluck!

Any other ideas from anyone else? We may be working on it a bit more tonight and I'm trying to get a good list of options before we decide to rebuild it.

i'm not exactly a virus expert, but i do know what i'm talking about. if you want to hear why, pm me and i'll discuss my credentials. don't feel like going into detail right now.

format the hard drive (don't use the quick format option) and reinstall windows.

just get it over with, you're giong to do it anyway.

Well boys and girls, guys and dolls, ladies and gents, we think its gone.

It took downloading Program Explorer and disabling the items the virus was using (in my case windows and I believe it was explore) and then deleting it.

When we booted it again it came back up after the ad-aware scan but we were able to delete it then and I've rebooted randomly a few times since and nothings come up.

Thanks for all of the advice all.

To delete the virus for good, you need this
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moment, lost in time. Gone, like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die" -Phil Ken Sebben
