    Swearing on TV is now allowed

    But only in Finnish. According to David Letterman censors now allow profanities on tv, as long as they are in Finnish. See:

    http://siirappi.com/~pasjohol/letterman.wmv

    How about allowing swearing on the piste, but also only in Finnish? All frustrated fencers could let out some steam and other people's feelings wouldn't be hurt. Except some Finnish fencers', but we can cope with that.

    Bring to me my battle-armor. / Bring my magic mail of copper,
    Bring me too my father's broadsword, / Keep the old man's blade from rusting;
    Long it has been cold and idle, / Long has lain in secret places,
    Long and constantly been weeping, / Long been asking for a bearer."

    Yes, a low, growling "Ei sa peitääääääääääääää!" would be very efficient I think!

    ('Ei sa peitää' means 'do not cover' in finnish; a phrase everyone in Sweden knows since it says so on all electric radiators.)

    I've heard refs suggest that if you lose your temper and curse, make sure it is in a language they don't understand. I've never been yelled at for cursing in German. Of course, I've never done that in front of a ref who spoke the language.

    one has to be VERY careful on that one, because some people speak languages you really don't expect them to be able to speak..........

    Especially at fencing matches. Something about swords seems to attract people who are bilingual.

    Yea, if you fence sabre, don't make a habit of swearing in Russian...
    That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again.

    I did that but my ref, who was an asian teenager, spoke very fluent German.

    This already happens. Haven't you ever seen a coach yelling "Finnish! Finnish!" at his fencer during a bout?

    I would think swearing in German is fairly obvious to most people. I mean, it doesn't really sound that different. French maybe, if you speak really fast.
