    Website for old fencing results

    Check out:
    http://sports123.com/fen/index.html

It gives the top 3 places for championships and olympic games all the way back to 1912. I thought that was pretty interesting, because USFA or FIE don't display these older records on the web.

*chuckle* note that Women's Foil Team is listed under "defunct events" for the Olympics, along with singlestick, epee masters, etc
That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again.

looking at the lists it realy makes one realise how quickly these fencers are forgotten. Looking at foil it is obvious why Sergiy Golubitskiy and Aleksandr Romankov have become house hold names (in the fencing community any way) but why arent people like Christian d'Oriola(FRA)? He won 2 olympics and 4 world championships just missing 5 with a silver. In my opinion he's just as good as the other two just with less hype.

d'Oriola was a couple of years ago declared as "the greatest foil fencer of the last century" or something of that effect by the FIE.

He is definitely not forgotten and is still celebrated quite a bit in France.
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

I recognise the name d'Oriola. Unfortunately, I have no idea how he fenced, while I can clearly picture the styles of Golubitsky, Romankov, and other recent fencers. This is the joy of video that can be ordered from the internet.

d'Oriola, Mangiarotti, Gaudin, Nadi, Wessel, Pawlowski, Fuchs, Mayer, Preis ... there are plenty of names I find familiar from these old lists. Though I can't say how they fenced, other than "well." It was too long ago, and I'm too young.

Romankov, though? I can say "stuttering clown," and know what it looks like.

I think d'Oriola is especially notable because he spanned the period of dry foil to electric (which apparently he dislike), proving he could win in both - just remarkable. I saw Pawlowski fence in early 1970s, and he was amazing, just amazing. The lack of footage makes it hard to keep these fencers in the public eye, unfortunately.

I am not sure if it is really a lack of footage , or the fact that nobody that
I am aware of cares to put an effort to dig out the films from the
    various national archives.

Maybe there are footages available in France, Italy, Switzerland or some
other country, but nobody has been asking for them. I wish FIE could put
some effort to find and preserve any footage that might be out there.
By the way, does FIE have an archive of pictures and footage ?
