Array Wireless internet I've been having a problem with the wireless internet on my laptop lately... namely that I can't get online. It all started about a week ago when my cat decided that he wanted to walk on my keyboard, stepped on a few keys, shut my computer off, and when I turned it back on, presto chango, no internet.
My parents' computers, which are wired into the system, can still use the internet. Mine, however, while it's connected to the internet and has excellent signal strength, has "limited or no connectivity" and thus, no internet. To quote: "You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. This problem occurred because the netword did not assign a network address to the computer."
I've been online before, and I've taken my computer out of state and when I got home I reconnected to the internet with no problems at all.
I've tried everything I can think of and have been suggested so far, from restarting the computer, to restarting the router, to disconnecting and reconnecting, to a lot of other stuff, and nothing's worked.
I hate phones, so I don't want to call support or anything, and I went on the Dell website (as my computer's a Dell) and looked around but found nothing that made any difference.
At this point, I'm about ready to scream. So I'm really hoping that someone here knows something that will help, cause I hear it's really hard to fence (or rather, be allowed to fence) after you've gone insane. -

Array Right click on the right bottom corner icon of the network. First, select repair. It will do a cycle of dysconnecting the wireless, restarting it, looking for places, etc. Click OK at the end of the cycle. If that does not fix the problem, then you need to right click the icon again and view wireless connections. Select the one connection that is your family, etc. and click connect. See if that fixes the problem. -

Array I've tried the repair button and it stops at the stage where it's renewing my IP address. And I am connected to the network. I just have "limited or no connectivity." (Quoting cause I really don't know what that's supposed to mean.) -

Array What OS are you running?
If you're running Windows 2000 or XP...
Click Start
Click Run
Type cmd
When the screen comes up, type ipconfig /all and hit enter.
What's displayed after you type that? Pound for pound, the amoeba is the most vicious animal on earth. -

Array Okay, it looks like what's happening is your computer is trying to get an IP address through DHCP, but can't contact a DHCP server.
Do you know if your computers at home are set up for DHCP, or have you assigned static IP addresses for each computer on your wireless network?
Good news is that barring hardware problems (which it doesn't look like at this point), it should be pretty easy to fix.
Run the same command (ipconfig /all) on one of your computers that works. If you're concerned about security, feel free to PM me the results. Pound for pound, the amoeba is the most vicious animal on earth. -

Array I'm assuming you've restarted the laptop once or twice since you had this problem...
Is the wireless integrated into your laptop, or is it a card that you can see? If you can see it, can you unplug it for about 15 seconds then plug it back in? Pound for pound, the amoeba is the most vicious animal on earth. -

Array Oh, the laptop has been on and off plenty of times.
All I know is that I have a wireless card that disconnects and reconnects with no problem when I click the repair button. -

Array Ok, whenever you have an IP address of 169.256.whatever, there's no way to get on the network. That, and your default gateway isn't set the same as your dad's. Set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and your IP should be 192.168.1.12 (that's what I use at least). The subnet mask should ALWAYS be 255.255.255.0. Yours is set to 255.255.0.0. The DNS server shouldn't matter much. I usually just set it the same as the default gateway.
Mind you, I'm not an expert at all. I just use wireless to get my neighbor's connection, but I have a great deal of experience messing around with this stuff. "What, really? I thought that song was just about a dragon who lived by the sea and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee."
"Dan, you're such a dumb*ss"

Array But Raz, I do set the IP address to a 192.etc. but when I do the ipconfig it doesn't change, still has the 169. Same deal with the subnet. -
