Actually I had fenced a couple of australians before, and I just fenced one at the men's epee national training camp this weekend. I thought he was pretty good. He was by no mean an olympic fencer, but he did give some of the top US fencers there a run for their money when we were practising team bouts.

    And he wasn't the least bit as arrogant as some olympic fencers that I know of.

    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

    Jon's seemed to hold the conviction that no "real" fencing happened or had ever happened west of the Hudson River, and that nobody not high in the Senior national point standings was worthy of even common civility. It pissed a lot of people off, myself included, and I frankly think the board is a much calmer, more reasonable, and much more helpful place without him.

    <Snip!!!!>

    It was this sort of indifference to the sensibilities and/or circumstances of others that made him a target, not his views on flicking or anything else. Maybe it was his New York upbringing...Who knows?

That's what I mean by the board being more "helpful" in his absence; people couldn't see past his arrogance to the value of whatever he was saying, so his message was often lost.

    mike,
    Jon's user number was 192. You can do a search and see his posts.

    Jon even answered a pm I sent him about grips (Hey, I was new). I guess it's all a matter of personal opinion though.

    hopefully, I hadn't pissed anyone off on here. But I do want everyone to know that I love to hear what everyone says, because I love hearing different viewpoints on this sport. So I hopefully didn't offend anyone. What you guys have to say, i plan on using in my own fencing technique.

    But does anyone have another topic? Howe about weapon repair...though I fear its out of the realm of this subject board.

    oh well!

    pz!

    And I'm only trying to set the record straight. He was never flamed because people didn't value his insight, as was implied. When he was flamed (which wasn't often), he was flamed for insensitivity and excessive arrogance. But then, I guess arrogance comes naturally to those who experience that level of success that early in life. Maybe he'll be different once he accumulates a few scars.

    And as for being raised in New York--hey, I'm sorry, man. It's a tough break I know, but I'm confident you can rise above it.

    [for all you New Yorkers out there, the preceding was a joke...]

    Also, don't judge all competitive fencers by the behavior of one.
