    Foil Refereeing in Leipzig

From a live view of the men's foil events, has anyone else gotten a little uncomfortable with the refereeing?

I noticed one touch where Beaudan made a coupe deceiving a parry attempt from Zhang, given against him as a parry riposte. It was far too long into the bout to make any difference but you could feel it was very exasperating for him.

A more methodical discomfort for me were the many times Deev and Zhang attacked into Sanzo's advance, him simply countering and receiving the touch.
Still I feel that ref's haven't learned the difference between a move forward and an intentional attack.

After Sanzo's third touch against Deev, the next touch is clear in the replay as an attack pris de fer by Deev, his blade moving towards sanzo's almost imobile blade, given as parry reposte - non valable to sanzo. Should have been 4-3 Deev.

I haven't been watching the feed but I see Sanzo and others do "attacks" like this all the time.

It simply will not change until everyone accepts that it is not the box's fault. It is the referee's fault.

I also felt quite uncomfortable watching refereeing of both Foil and Saber.

Sorry, but that is one of the reasons why we (Epeeists) are a happy bunch. For the most part, we do not have to worry about somebody else's opinion of an attack.

    Yup.

According to the fencingChannel blog there were some suspect decisions made against Beevers in his fight against Kudayev.

Not only that but, if the decision seems unfair it can lead to bad feeling:

„I did not really get into the bout and that also explains why I was eight points down in the beginning. The referee took some controversial decisions and my opponent was not penalized for blocking his body with his head. The fast flicking shoulder touches that I have been using successfully until now are no longer allowed under the new rules. I had great plans for these championships but that’s what fencing is like, things can also go wrong.”
