I normally hate this kind of thread/ post like plague, but here we go....
Long, Long ago, in a Jr College not too far away, there was a fencing program. I being a fan of swash and buckle, a nominal SCA member, a veteran of a couple ma programs, gamer of long standing, and in need of a few PE credits, took my first class.
I was hooked. I was pretty darn good. Others in the program thought so to, because I was never part of the elite crew, they never said so. I went on for a couple of years (okay... I spent way, way too long at the Jr college). I was looking into 4 years with programs for scholarships. Then my knee dropped out from under me one day in class. I screamed. I reshifted my patella back from the 90 degree off it was. Wimpered and nearly screamed. I hobbled off the salle floor. I spent a while with my knee in an immobilizing brace. I had a choice, keep going or stop. Keeping going meant the next time my knee did this, I was not going to get up from it. Surgical options were not so good in those days. I might be able to walk in my old age even if it did work.
I admit, I opted to limp. I hung up my gear. I left. The limp went away after too much physical therapy.
I kept my hand in. Since I was a role playing gamer and a nominal writer, I was able to utilize some of my knowledge for those pursuits. I could still pretend to fence through my characters.
I was a pretty well known gamer in those early days of gaming. I worked for a couple of different gaming companies in a few different capacities. My name is strewn about in the credits of some old games and suppliments. I have written a few games, to minimal to nominal distribution. I have been attached to too many failed game companies (that is another story.... ). So I just kept gaming.
Over the last few years, I returned to the web with a vengence. I checked all the game sites and was amazed. I noticed on web sites around the net that gamers keep re-inventing the wheel. Gamers, having an local oral culture, keep discovering and rediscovering the same techniques. Those gamers of today are only slightly better off than we gamers of yesteryear in many ways. So I took to giving out game advice to new and newer gamers.
MoonHunter Sayeth became a common post line on a number of RPG sites. I have been giving tips (
www.openroleplaying.org/tools/tips/ mostly), doing advice ( forums.rpghost.com ), telling tales from gaming history, and writing articles (
http://www.strolen.com ). Recently because of my young children, I have been unable to game with table top group... so I have been playing online in a number of forums and creating bits and pieces of settings and such (again mostly at
www.strolen.com ). Since I have become active again, I have managed to get my name of two game products (The Midian Suppliment being the only one I am proud of). I may even get another game published. Right now I am working on a Romantic Fantasy Renaissance Italy setting. Once again, fencing comes back to my life. And research for that led me back to here.
