Passing Muster... Havent done a tournament in a while, what kind of equipment checks do I need to be able to pass? Im not really concerned with mask testing or weight test, but something more like too much bend in my blade (foil). Anyone know the rule on this? Also any other checks I need to be aware of? This is just a local tournament im planning on attending. -

Array Check m.8 for the bend, and m.6 - m.13 generally. -

Array The locals tourneys in California typically only check the mask. At a sectional level event like Long Beach Invitational it'll be mask, body cords, and lames....sometimes weapons also. I have yet to see curvature checked at a local....although if it's really bad you might get a comment. The max bend for foil/epee/sabre is 1cm/1cm/4cm. -
Divisional-ish level events down here will check body cords but not lames. -
lets see some of the ones that can get you caught out even if there is no formal armourers weapon/equipment check - and you think everything is taken care of;
long socks that overlap your breeches?
underplastron?
insulated handles on your foils? (believe this still stands)
proper fit of your lame?
...sure there are others. -

Pretty much the same here - if it looks like it's a thousand years old, it'll get checked, but most of the time, the lame is passed. Pound for pound, the amoeba is the most vicious animal on earth. -

There's a guy in my club with a lame he got from his father.. its at least 20 years old. And it passes -- looks better than some of the new ones, which haven't been as well cared for. And he's got a friend who has one from his father, which is also still used... -
Make sure it passes weight. Foils fail that test fairly often, and if your blades fail, you have no time to fix it and you wind up with a yellow card before you even start the bout. -
Or, if all your foils fail, 2 Red cards or more... -

...sure there are others. Anybody got link to an official checklist or something? I'm hoping to do some competiting outside of school, and I hope to be prepared. Are breeches and long socks really neccesary? I fence in a regular pair of track pants at school, but if that's not sufficient for competition, I'd like to know beforehand. -

Track pants are NOT allowed....ESPECIALLY in SoCal.
Go to the link in my signature block...in that document is a check list.
Look me up for gear....I'm in Burbank... -

Array Didn't think they were. Burbank, eh? An hour away by bus. Convenient. I'll drop by when I have a chance, thanks. -

Call first....or better yet, check my hours (front page of my website). Also, check the appearance section of my website...I may be vendoring at a tournament more convenient to you. -
Hi! Originally Posted by KD5MDK Divisional-ish level events down here will check body cords but not lames. Over here, they will check 750 gms and 0.5 mm before each bout, but nothing else unless is seems to fail. I have never seen a mask punch test being done.
Have a nice time!

Array Interesting...I was reading the blurb on the new USFA General Liability Insurance Plan ( as posted on the USFA website ), and noticed this in the FAQ:
The club activity must be sanctioned by the USFA in order for coverage to apply. Clubs who have elected coverage and individual member coaches are covered. There are no restrictions with regard to proper attire; however, this raises the likelihood of a potential injury and negligence which could increase the chances for an injury that could result in a liability claim.
Is there a separate insurance policy covering tournaments, or does this apply across the board now? ( I think it is a new condition, is it not? ) -
