Array Serenity I just saw this movie and beside the retarded looking girl this movie was better than all the Star Wars and LOTR crap combined. -

Array Is that the one with Keira Knightley?
I've heard its supposed to be rather odd. "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." - George S. Patton -

Array I can't wait to see Serenity, the Firefly series is easily one of my favorite sci-fi series ever. -

Array I haven't seen that series. When does it show? -

Array It doesn't anymore. However you can find it on DVD. It is the series that spawned the Serenity movie.
Well actually now that I think of it Sci-Fi is showing it at some point. If you check the listings Sci-Fi has it. -

Array I've never watched the series... but if you like sci-fi RL, there's a book called "Firefly" by Piers Anthony (unrelated to the series). I suspect it is something you might enjoy as it he's a quirky author. He writes in a number genres, in this case, Firefly is a erotic sci-fi thriller. Array Well I thought the movies was cool but I'm more of a Trekkie. I can't stand LOTR. LOTR is very low class. LOTR is for the SCA folks. Star Wars is LOTR set in space. -

Array I don't get to the movies too often - OK, almost never. (That's what cable's On-Demand feature is for.) But I might just have to see this one. I was hooked on the TV series, and really disappointed when they pulled the plug on it. I would LOVE it if this brought it back to TV for another go.
Do they succeed in making a real movie out of this, or is it like one of the many Trek movies that failed miserably at the transition from TV to big screen? And is that mysterious hooker-chick Inara still in it? She was an intriguing character. Lots of sexual tension between her and Mal. -

Array The Sci-Fi channel has been showing reruns of Firefly (the name of the space ship is Serenity...a Firefly class ship) on Friday nights. I don't know if they're doing it anymore, now that the movie is out.
Basically, it's a space western.
Inara is still in it. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array Words cannot describe the goodness that is Serenity. It is everything Episodes 1-3 should have been, and more... The only way to atone for being occasionally a little over-dressed is by being always absolutely over-educated. -Oscar Wilde -

Array I liked it, alot. It holds a little something for everyone. I think that even people who are not neccessarily SciFi fans will enjoy this film. In addition, you do not have to have watched the TV series to understand it. "Since when does being a patriot in America mean shutting your mouth?"

Array I'm mixed. I loved the TV series; the movie felt frantic.
Beyond this, there lurk spoilers. Don't read if you haven't seen.
It was painted like every character in the movie, no matter how minor, had a backstory that involved more than the 13 episodes we've been fortunate enough to see.
The Operative and his ilk should have been chasing River for a long time. Book has a past we'll never know about (and when did he and Inara leave the ship, anyway?). We've seen Reavers, what, twice? They're the most-feared group of crazies in the galaxy, and all of a sudden, there's a nice neat explanation for them. And in one big explosion of violence, River is cured. Not much of an explanation there either.
What's with the lingering shots of the kid on the Shepherd's colony? I feel like we're supposed to know him. We're supposed to know Mr Universe better.
If I hadn't seen the show, the film would have felt like a fun little afternoon at the movies. As is, it's a trailer for what should have been tantalizingly played out over a few seasons. So, good for Joss Whedon, and I hope it does well. Given the show's cancellation, the current outcome is probably the best possible one, though I'm going to miss seeing the characters unfold in the time that only a TV series can provide.
