Check these out, look even better than a straight pin, @ about .8 mm:

re: pins instead of screws

One problem: the outer sleeve of the tip (that the screws currently thread into) has to be electrically insulated from the core & front (hence that plastic layer). Otherwise the whole tip is grounded as if you were hitting your opponent's guard (or the strip), and you get no light.

A pin all the way through would ground things. There's probably a way to do it and keep it insulated, but maybe not easily enough to make it worth it.

Peet, a very good point.

One of the samples that Dan received was used by one of the fencers with no problems, except maybe a referee or two. The tip was very smooth.

One warning, the tip comes without a contact spring, so if you get one, make sure and have some.

Excellent point Peet, the pin would probably have to be some non-conductive material. That's what I get for dashing off posts while I am at work. I knew there was something I was forgetting, thank you for reminding me.

Like the time me and my buddy were backing out of his parking spot at 2:00 am. We were suddenly reminded I had parked my motorcycle behind his car.

Suddenly reminded by a sickening crunching sound.
