Maybe if more fencers get caught doping people will think fencing REALLY is a sport?.We should encourage all E's to dope up for nationals and get caught- they could use the year off to like TRAIN! Or maybe not.....

Raelyn is hardly an E fencer. Still, I know her pretty well and can pretty much agree that she's hardly the type to use performance enhancing drug. She is also very much the type to have mistakenly used some drug which may be on the banned list.

Edew, the story was pretty clear that the drug she tested for was not performance enhancing, just one of the many ephidrine-based drugs commonly used in cold meds and allergy pills.
She apologized for the mistake, they gave her the minimum suspension. End of story.

The story says amphetamine, not ephedrine. That's a different deal. Which is correct?

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV.

Both are amphetamines or "uppers" small difference. The version I read said it was an ingredient in Over The Counter med.

Anyone who is qualified (either through study or recreational use) care to straighten me out?

OKay, seriuosly, where does one find a list of prohibitted substances?

I thought about this early on because my daughter takes meds for ADHD and fences.

Also I noticed that some energy bars contain ephedrine. I have assumed that I should avoid those.

You guys always know the answers so, please fill me in.

There is a hotline that you can call to check whether or not our medicine is allowed. I don't have the number, but I believe that it's a USOC hotline. I think that there is a listing of it in the USFA Athlete's Handbook. As far as I recall the only things which are really tricky are decongestants and antihistamines, because some contain decongestants (Claritin D).

Many asthma medications also contain prohibited substances. The common rescue inhaler albuterol (it's in Proventil) is permitted with a physician's note, a form available on the USOC website. I always take it with me to NACs. Be very careful if you take any medicines for asthma, either long-acting or rescue. Steroids are commonly part of asthma treatment as well, and they are forbidden. I have heard that topical steroids (skin lotions for rashes and itches) can show up in the bloodstream on some tests in some situations.

Division I Nationals you can be randomly tested (I think top 32?) so you're not home free just because you didn't make the finals.

Read the labels on cold medicines of any sort. They routinely have decongestants in them. So do allergy medicines over-the-counter. So do some pain relievers.

Caffeine in high concentrations is also a restricted drug (I was told in Coaches College by a USOC rep that a woman who drank a double cappuccino could conceivably test positive because of the low body-weight).

Uh-oh there goes my cocktail of double-espresso and Primatene Mist.

Seriously, I take Acrivastine for alleregies and hayfever. I have to be very careful about over-medication because of low body weight. As far as I know, as long as I keep the doses very low, and accumulative I am all right.

Question for anyone. Can you test positive for banned drugs via intake of natural sustances.
IE:Poppy seeds or Nutmeg = opiate type drug
or is this just an urban myth type thingy?

I am not a Dr, but I have read that ephedrine looks like amphetamine in tests. In fact amphetamine is just an artificial version of ephedrine, orriginally used to treat asthma.

Seriously ... with all the substances they DO ban ... perhaps it would be easier for them to just print a list of cold medications on the counter we CAN take! It would be a heck of a lot shorter I'm sure! and no guessing involved.

Far too many athletic careers have been cut short because someone had a cold and took something to get rid of the sniffles!!!!

Only one person I know of has been disqualified in the recent past for taking something for the sniffles--that gymnast in, I think, the Olympics, who was given the medicine by others. Other situations have involved more serious drugs.

The young lady in this particular situation is an experienced enough fencer, and knowledgeable enough about medications, that she should have known better. A year's suspension is a relief because of how mild it is.
