(I'm allergic to pain; it hurts me) I had an interpreter who told me this story about his root canal:
He was in the chair and well into the root canal when the needle (or something) broke inside the tooth. It was nearing the end of the day for the dentist, so the dentist informed him that he'd have to leave the broken bit inside and cover it up and then continue the next day. So, he agreed and left the office.
He told me that the novocaine wore off 45 minutes later as he was walking home. He was hit by a mind-numbing wave of pain and he was crying and frozen to the spot on the sidewalk. He had to get his friend's sister who was a pediatrician to write him a prescription for morphine pills.
"Wonderful things, those morphine pills!" he said. -

Array I had one root canal done. It was quick and completely painless. However, the reason I had it done was because the nerve in the tooth had died so mine was a special case. -

Array That's not really a special case, mike. Generally you get a root canal done because the decay has gone into the root/never of the tooth. Hence it dies.
I had one done a little over a month ago. Least painful dental procedure Ive ever experienced, including cleanings. "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"

Array After an afternoon in the dental chair and a day of recovery I have returned!!
I turns out I wasn't getting a full root canal. I was geting a pulpyectimy(sp?) and only a portion of the nerve (which was absest(sp?)) was getting removed. They scooped out all the dead tissue and filed away the decayed tooth enamal and then packed the tooth with a dental cement (it looks like a cross between gum and white out) and then sent me on my merry way WITHOUT ANY PAIN MEDICATION AT ALL!!
I told my dentist that I have low tolerance to most pain a meds and a little will do me. So she decided that it was best to let try out over the counter meds instead of anything stronger. The only problem is that I am flat broke untill friday and couldn't afford any ibuprofin or anything. So I had to suffer through the night & most of the following day with no pain meds aside from aspirin that wasn't helping at all.
I'm feeling better now though. I have a second full root canal in a few weeks. Fleche!! Fleche for fantasy.

An old fashioned remedy for toothaches is cloves (that brown spice you bake with). If you have any in your cupboard (unlikely if you're a typical single male) you can rub it on your gums. It will numb the pain. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

I do have cloves in my cupboard (I love to cook so I try to keep stocked on spices)
It wasn't a normal toothache. I have a molar that broke and about 1/3 of it is missing. The tissue that is exposed became inflamed and swollen. Because they filled the open portion of the tooth with cement, the tissue had nowhere to expand to. Thus causing extremely pain from the build up of pressure. I don't think cloves would have helped that. Fleche!! Fleche for fantasy.

Array See....this is why I'll insist on full sedation when I have my work done...I'd rather fall asleep, wake up, and puke a few times (which I always do when coming out of general anesthesia) than lay there with a drill in my mouth.
but then again....I'm a wuss... -

I don't think cloves would have helped that. I got an absessed tooth as a teen on a long weekend. I got through 3 days of pain by soothing the area with cloves and ice packs... The cloves numbed it, while the ice reduced the swelling. Hey you have nothing to lose if you are in the same situation after your next time...
I am impressed you have cloves BTW... Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -
