I wonder if that was used when they had those big safety buttons on the ends of the weapons.

We have one of those in our club as a decoration. I think Mr Epee is right. I'm pretty sure it was used for some kind of military training. Fleche!! Fleche for fantasy.

It is an old sabre mask--military sabre, which was trained using wooden swords (wasters if you want to get the nomenclature correct). Duelling sabre, even in the 19th C, used birdcage masks--see this attachment http://www.fencing.net/forums/attach...e-fechten2.jpg Why sabre? Because you don't take heads with the point.
