I wonder if that was used when they had those big safety buttons on the ends of the weapons.

I wonder how many people have worn that mask, and what the world was like when they did...

What was the point of the holes? Was that where they put the clear plastic in the first transparent masks?

    I don't think it's a fencing mask.

Looks more like an old army bayonette training mask.

We have one of those in our club as a decoration. I think Mr Epee is right. I'm pretty sure it was used for some kind of military training.

Yeah, it's all fun and games till someone loses an eye. I was thinking it looked like something an inmate would wear in a hospital for the criminally insane. Makes me wonder where my ex is these days.

    Then it's hilarious...

It's not a Western style fencing mask. Think bamboo, think Japanese!

Kendo masks don't like that... o.o' A thrust with the shinai at that thing still wouldn't be pretty tho... It just doesn't like all that safe to me u.u'' I'm looking at my shinai and I'm thinking... a strong thrust and that mask goes flying off the head...

It is an old sabre mask--military sabre, which was trained using wooden swords (wasters if you want to get the nomenclature correct). Duelling sabre, even in the 19th C, used birdcage masks--see this attachment http://www.fencing.net/forums/attach...e-fechten2.jpg
Why sabre? Because you don't take heads with the point.
