I sure have noticed this - by why? I am married now, but when I was single a woman with those characteristics would not have been a turnoff - quite the contrary!

When men and women are looking for mates, at first glance it appears that men are in charge. Not true. The most sucessful men are the ones that know how to read the signals from women.
Women are the first to establish and hold eye contact, touch etc.... for example:
A man and woman are in a cafe. The man may notice the woman first, but until she gives the signal to approach nothing will happen. The first signal a woman gives is looking at the man until she establishes eye contact, then looking away.
Other subtle signs of interest would be further eye contact, blushing, touching her hair etc...
The next "go ahead signal" is physical contact. Often the woman is the first to initiate physical contact. It will be again something subtle, like lightly touching a man's arm, or some other "accidental" contact.
A man who doesn't wait or misses too many "go ahead" signals will make her uncomfortable and she will begin to lose interest in the man.
Men are unable to settle down and wait of the signals because they are too eager and horny, will have trouble. The process will seem too slow and too subtle. Since woman are in control…. He'll likely not get lucky…. unless she is in the same state (or there is something else she wants) and she decides to fast-forward the ritual.
