| Should I wait? Hello everyone!
I am only 16 years old. Although I really would like to do fencing. It looks like a challange, not to mention fun. Should I wait or should I start now?

| On a second thought, you probably should wait. Wait until FIE has been overthrown, and every FIE official been put against the wall.
Life is too short to relearn fencing rules every 6 months.

Besides that if you start now you may be able to use fencing to help you get scholarships for some colleges.

It's a personal decision for you, but if you want to try it there is no reason why someone your age couldn't be fencing.

| What is the FIE??
Yes I know that because I am asking fencers most of you will say go for it. Although Sometimes people tend to regret some of the things that they have tried at younger ages.
Anyone have any advice on how to get started?
Space_Cadet j/w how old are you?
Most people see something and say why. I dream of things that are unrealistic and say why not?

| You seek answers and yet you question my response.
Look, if there is a fencing club in your town or nearby, check it out. If not, tough noogies.

Try this-
1.Look up a *SPORT* fencing club near you, on
this very sites' directory.
2. *GO THERE*
3. Observe fencing of all three weapons.
4. Most clubs offer an introductory lesson,
*FREE of *CHARGE*. *TRY IT!*
5. If you start hearing a voice in your head
saying "MUST FENCE, MUST FENCE!", You are
then hooked. Join club, take lessons, fence,
compete.
See, that was easy, eh?

Join a fencing club/school. Check out www. usfencing.org and navigate the website to find a club near you. Space_Cadet j/w how old are you?
I don't know, you tell me. Most people see something and say why. I dream of things that are unrealistic and say why not?
Great, then why did you ask if you should start fencing if you already knew the answer. [This message has been edited by Iwant2bafencer (edited 07-06-2001).] |

I say go for it! I've been fencing since I was 17 and I am now 21. My only regret is that I didn't start sooner.
If you need any help locating a club near you, I'm sure a number of us here would be glad to assist. Good luck.

| Hmmm...I had my first lesson last Tuesday. It went pretty much like this:
running around, sidestepping, stretching, running around again. Then I got to learn the delights of the on guard position (which I kind of already knew) stepping forwards and backwards until I could tolerate no more, stepping and extending the arm, extending the arm and then lunging, stepping then extending the arm then lunging, and being told off for bending my arm again without realising it. Basically learning different ways of poking the guy in the chest whilst trying to get used to looking through a black metal grill, and not falling over...
Which doesn't make it sound too exciting, but I'm definitly going again. So, Wannabe, go to a club, watch for a while if you don't want to learn right away. I'm sure you'll join in eventually. Like someone said to me, how cool would it be to say you had a sword fight? |

You should choose epee.
You should come to UMass Amherst after high school.

| Umass Amherst? A little more detail is good.
I am still looking for a place to watch and try fencing, and I'm almost there. So you can all rejoice that you wont have to answer as many stupid questions! (maybe)
