| People, unlike rats, don't stop breeding when their population grows beyond the capability of the environment to sustain it. Unfortunately, it sometimes appears that those least suited for breeding are the ones who pursue it most recklessly.
I sometimes say that people should be required to have a dog before they have a kid, but I think that's grossly unfair to the dogs.

| Well, I think each kid should have a dog... Unfortunately I didn't
I don't know what's your problem with the ears pierced when young - I was still a baby when my mother got my ear pierced... I love wearing earrings, but if I had to get my ear pierced now, I surely won't do it, as now I know it's painful and I hate pain!!! |

| I'll tell you what the problem is with piercing a little kid's ears... Two problems, really. First and foremost - it's permanent. The kid should have a CHOICE in the matter. Even if years later she opts to let the holes close, they still look pierced. Of course, there are a lot of people who would make the same choice argument about circumcision, but let's not open up *that* can or worms...
Second, it's a real pain in the butt to take care of. I was in my mid-teens before I got mine done, and they kept getting infected and the holes kept closing, even though I took really good care of them. I wouldn't want to have to deal with that on a baby or even an older kid. I figure a kid ought to wait till it's old enough to care for it before having it done.

Because where I live, ear piercing is something girls tend to do as they enter their teen years. So pierced ears on a young child seems just as wrong as dressing a small girl in slinky sexy attire -- it is not appropriate for the age. A cultural difference, to be sure, but in my culture it's just icky.
Perhaps there is an unspoken cultural subtext here: that, here at least, pierced ears are an indication that the girl has taken a step taken on the path towards sexual maturity, and that's what makes it so wrong on small children, for whom sexual behavior is inappropriate.

| Well, here a pierced ear means nothing for girls - it mostly means only that the parents are happy that they have a daughter, and even if a girl is like me, so very boyish (as a little child I had boy-like short hair too), it's visible that she's not a boy. And anyway, children wear children-stlye jewellery, so mostly a little heart or some animal characters, cherries... an usually something without a stone. I used to have such ones, too (I had a golden heart), later I had gold with a tiny red halfstone, now I wear a bigger turquoise in silver. |

| I don't see what the big deal is... there are cultures (such as Nusy's) where pierced ears are just pierced ears... nothing more. Piercing young children I believe is also common in East Indian culture. Other than the initial pain… how is it different than wearing any other kind of jewellery?
I am very surprised by the reaction that some people are having... it's not like we're talking about dressing the little tykes in leopard skin halters, tight black pants and stiletto heels.
As for the permanent nature… a very high percentage of women (and men) have pierced ears. Clip-on earrings are painful and hard to find. I have pierced ears but wear a lot of vintage and antique jewellery… I can only wear it for a few hours whereas earrings for pierced ears can be worn pain-free as long as I want.
Having said that…. If I were a parent, I would not get my baby girl’s ears pierced unless it was part of the father’s culture to do so (as it isn’t part of mine). The main reason I wouldn't is because I see it as a nice mother-daughter thing to do when she decided she wanted to have it done…
However, I don’t find girls of any age having their ears pierced to be inappropriate … perhaps other parts pierced… or getting tattoos…

| I think that it should be a choice for girls to pierce their ears. Mine are not pierced, and at this point, I never want them pierced. Since I'm trypanophobic (fear of needles/injections), if my mom had gotten my ears pierced when I was young, I think the problem would be much worse. Also because of this, the very idea of stabbing a hole through someone's ear is repulsive, although I try to tolerate it on others and not think about it too much. Why, then, if I don't like poky things, am I a fencer? PM me if you're really interested, I won't go into it here.
That said, sometimes I'll wear an ear cuff, which is very comfortable, and it's a little different than what most people normally see. |

| Cool! I like ear cuffs.... I also find them very difficult to find.
Ear cuffs... ear muffs... bought my first pair ever. I'm beginning to wonder about the wisdom of getting my hair cut very short at the end of the summer (then again a few days ago).

| Yes, they are hard to find here too. I have one that has a big spiral, and I hang different miniature Christmas ornaments from it; the Hallmark ones are the perfect size! I have several Ewoks, an Eiffel Tower, a Daisy Duck... and I'm going to get more now that the season's started. |

Don't worry about being late, just take you jacket and shoes off and join the party.
