| I brought in some fresh apples from the tree in my yard, they're in the wicker basket over on the coffee table...

| I don't think those kosher rules had anything to do with health. Just that, like the dietary restrictions of any number of other insular groups, it's one of the easiest ways of differentiating "us" from "them." Any health benefits were purely accidental.
So does scavenging apples mean jewish people can't eat them? I'm lost.

| I was under the impression that some of it had to do with pigs and trichonosis...

| It does. Health reasons. I don't know all the reasons why each food was considered not kosher, but I do know that pigs were forbidden because of the disese. Any us-and-them effects were purely accidental.
And apples aren't scavenging, it's scrumping. |

| Anyone here ever been at sea and watched the sun go down? On a calm day, there's a quick flash of greenish light just as the sun ducks below the horizon. Quite pretty.

| So crows and turkey vultures aren't kosher? Such a pity. There looks to be some good meat on them. Some people talk about the swallows returning to Capistrano every year as a sign of spring. Where I live, I know it's spring when the turkey vultures return. And you can always tell when there's been a good killing in the neighborhood, because the vultures are much more active than usual.

| Joseph Heller does a great riff in "God Knows" about Jewish dietary law:
"To the goyim He gives bacon, sweet pork, juicy sirloin and rare prime ribs of beef. To us He gives a pastrami. In Egypt we get the fat of the land. In Leviticus he prohibits us from eating it. A perpetual statute he makes it yet, that we eat neither the fat nor the blood. The blood contained the spirit of life and therefore belonged only to Him. The fat was bad for our gall bladders."

| Too much effort - you need 400 of them for a decent meal.

Oh! By the way Go? Your husband-in-law says hi and that he's enjoying having a wife-in-law...
Is there any non-junk food to munch on here? Oh great! There's a veggie platter!

| I like tums, but they don't help me much when acid reflux keeps food from going down. I find that drinking plenty of fluid with my meal helps the most.
