| Hi all, I'm back after wife and I had a lovely (but too short) vacation in Kauai. That's the Garden Island of Hawaii. Lovely, but a lot of time in an airplane to get to!

| Haven't been to Kauai, but loved the Big Island. Yes, it seems like it would be proper to stop the plane half way across and spend the night. Might be a little damp though! |

| Oh, I do love vacations. I need to figure out a destination for a trip I'd like to take next summer...any suggestions? Somewhere where I know the language (or at least can get by in it) is preferable...so, somewhere in Europe, probably...

| Well what languages, beside english, do you speak/understand then? Or would it be enough that the citizens will understand english?
It's difficult to suggest anything else than Great Britain or Ireland if we don't know your criteria...

| Meh, or your part of Europe. It seems that most Scandinavians speak at least some English. Whenever I needed translation I just looked for a Swede or a Nowegian. It never failed.

However, she did say "Somewhere where I know the language (or at least can get by in it)". Does she speak swedish/norwegian/danish?
Whether we can get by in her language is another matter entirely, is it not?

| She speaks French and Spanish and some Italian. She may say that her French isn't good, but don't believe it, she does speak it well- at least well enough to get by. |

| You like me! You really really like me!
Indeed, I should have specified which languages I speak. G?F? is quite right in her assessment -- in my case, the choices of destination are limited. Perhaps a better question would be, which cities or regions of Spain/Italy/France/etc. should I visit?

| Which reminds me that I've not been working on my Irish in way too long. Quote:

Gee, you'd get by basically anywhere. A friendly manner and some gesturing usually makes up for the lack of vocabulary.

The questions then become what kind of things do you like and what places have you already visited? If you haven't been to Paris or Rome yet then those would be great to visit - those are fantastic. Would you be going for museums, scenery, club scene, food, wine? If you want a more country experience than city, then Provence and Tuscany would be outstanding.

| I didn't see German in your list of available languages but my second favorite place on earth is Berlin.
Although, it's not for everyone. |

| I've noticed that the Guinness is much better in Ireland. I think the French word for that is "terroir". "Guinness is good for you!" |

| Not, I must quickly add, that Guinness is actually bad anywhere, unless it is found in a small country store where the bottles have sat on the shelf until very dusty. |

| It is a proven fact (I've conducted the research myself) that Guinness tastes better the closer you are to the Blessed Isle. Guinness in Germany tastes better than Guinness in the US. Guinness in the UK tastes better than Guinness in Germany. Guinness in Ireland tastes better than it does anywhere else in the world.
