"You take this &%$#@&%! weapon and you &%$#@&%! your &%$#@&%! opponent until he &%$#@&%! for mercy, and then you &%$#@&%! him again! You &%$#@&%! got that?!"

Or something like that. The exact phrasing eludes me.

Not sure who said these, or even the exact words. I think I saw it on some human interest segment during a golf tournament...

"Every day that you do not practice is another day before you can become great"

"Every day you do not practice, one of your opponents IS practicing"

A few random ones:

"Think less about hitting, and more about constructing the hit",

"Keep the fire in your heart, and the ice in your head" (someone on the Forum said that, can't remember who, but it's great",

"Make it snappy!",

"The aim of fencing is to know what your oponent wants to do, and make him do what he thinks he wants to do",

"Kill the *******".

Just dont complain to the referee asking for a ten minute break cause of that.

afencer will become famous soon enough
These are some of my favorites for training:

- When you are not practising, someone else is; when you meet that person they will beat you

- Luck is when preparation meets opportunity

- The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare

Okay, so this is not quite the same thing, but I think it is a funny story and could be considered advice (the make it look cool part) in some sense...

So I was fencing in the pools at an open, and a former clubmate of mine was refereeing. Opponent attacks, I take six and shoot for the hand, which hits flat, so I continue to the foot ducking under the opponents counter, but just before I hit the ref calls halt (thinking that the hand touch should have scored), my foot touch lands and my light goes off. I turn to look at the ref say:

Me: The halt was for the touch on the foot right?
Ref: No, the touch came after the halt.
Me: (pull up my mask and stare at the ref) So what was the halt for exactly?
Ref: (Somewhat sheepishly, knowing that he blew the call and cost me a touch) No touch, it landed after the halt.
(short pause)
Me: Okay, but tell me this (ref gets ready for my screaming argument), did it look cool?
Ref: (smiling) It looked very cool, it would have been a nice touch.
Me: Then that's what counts!

And I go on to win the bout and finish second in the pool... At least I think it is a funny story.

Once, my coach, Jim Denton, was working with a strong junior foilist. The foilist, still being young, thought he knew most everything. He refused to cooperate in a certain sequence of actions in a lesson and Jim raised his mask, gripped his weapon, looked at the foilist and said in a low voice: "Don't make me beat you with this."

One of my old coaches...we'll call him "Doc" for the sake of the story...had this great saying for foil. "Hit them in the silver area!" Imagine the hilarity the first time we came across the blue lame's.

That's why I usually say it "Hit the metallic part, guys."....typically to beginners who are hitting everything in sight EXCEPT their opponent's lames!

For my beginning students, I offer two rules:

Rule #1: Never point the weapon at anyone's face until they have a mask on and is ready to fence. (A typical safety rule.)

Rule #2: Hit the body not the blade.

#2 applies mainly to the kids. Too many of them think fencing is Pricess Bride or Star Wars and the goal is to bash the opponent's blade until it become inoperable. I tell them to aim for the body and let the opponent figure out how to stop that.

Thinking about how to attack, what to do next etc.
