| Y'know, when I was going for my job the people doing the hiring considered whether I actually had any relevant experience and demonstrable skills . . .

| Actually, the evacuation plan for Houston is based on school affiliation (it does away with the ethnicity, soci-economic, etc issues).
Sooners, Mustangs (SMU), Frogs (TCU) are to take I45 North.
t-sips (ut grads) and Bears (Baylor) are to take US 290 West.
Tigers (LSU) and other coon-a**es take I10 East.
non school affiliated Hispanics, Miners (UTEP), UTSA, take I10 West and US 59 South.
Lumberjacks (SFA) take US 59 North.
And the Aggies take Loop 610.

| I thought this was interesting: http://news.gallaudet.edu/article.asp?id=5665
BTW, it costs 10k USD per semester to go to Gallaudet. Pretty expensive, I hardly think that college is the first thing on a student's mind when struck by a disaster. Especially trying to come up with funds for that. In my opinion, Gallaudet is just trying to increase their paying student population.
(ps, sorry for the off-topic post, but I was too lazy to make a new thread)

(ps, sorry for the off-topic post, but I was too lazy to make a new thread) | $20,000/year isn't all that expensive for college. $30,000-$40,000 is on the more expensive side of private colleges. |

(ps, sorry for the off-topic post, but I was too lazy to make a new thread) | Cornflower, the University of California system is doing much the same thing. We're waiving graduate tuition and enrolling students as visiting students. Possibly Gaulladet is also modifying its tuition policies.
If you're within a couple of semesters of finishing your undergraduate degree, or just at the brink of completing your thesis or dissertation for an advanced degree--believe me, it matters! I think Gaulladet is doing a good thing. Enabling students to begin or continue their college education plans is one way of helping their lives get back on track.

| cornflower,
many schools are doing the same thing all across the country. It is probably a bigger consideration due to the timing of the disaster. It occured basically in the week before the fall semester starts at most colleges. I actually know someone who was in the process of driving to New Orleans in a u-haul to start the fall semester at Tulane when the hurricane struck. As she was already in the process of getting down and into school, she certainly had a 'now what?' type moment in terms of her life and what she should do. Its nice to know that there are plenty of schools reaching out to help these students at a time when they don't really know what to do with their life...
And as an aside... 10k / semester is actually fairly reasonable for any college... many are getting up past 15k / semester at this point... the cost of an education is a scary thing.

| schools with big endowments are offering classes for free, schools with no endowments are offering "emergency admission" or the like...... for the most part, anyway.
and i would imagine that the people who LIVE in new orleans aren't as concerned about college as the people who ONLY go to school there--- yes, if you live there, things like meals and clothes are a huge priority. if you life elsewhere and suddenly don't have a school to go to and no other plans for the semester....
it seriously can mess with someone's life plan!!
