Besides the fact that I'm, er... not built well to wear form fitting pants, my only beef with fencing knickers is how they're white. I mean, one slip, one scuff, one bump against something dusty and poof - you've got a big noticeable mark on them. Not a big deal, but still...

The only problem I have with "knickers" is that I'm English and where I come from the word "knickers" refers to frilly women's underpants. I usually call them "britches."

Anyway, shin shots aren't too common or too painful. I've always thought though that it should be required to wear kneepads -- getting hit in the knees hurts!
