The answer depends on the competition. To fence at the 2005 Tampa Vets World Championship you must be 50 years old by Aug 31, 2005.
We won't know the cutoff for the 2006 World Championships in England until we know the dates. The FIE defined the eligibility as meeting the age qualification on the first day of the month in which the competition is held.
In 2002, the tournament was Aug 30-Sep 1. So you had to be 50, for example, by July 31, 2002. In 2001 for the championships in Martinique which were held in May, you had to be 50 by April 30, 2001.
This is absurd, but who is surprised at that with the FIE involved? They should change it to have the eligibility date on Jan 1 of the year, as it is for Cadets and Juniors.
The USFA does its best. All this past year Larry Pinkus's points from the Richmond Veterans Nac were listed on the over 50 list. Note that the USFA had a list for over 50 while the FIE holds a World Championship for the 50-59 age group. Then he appeared on the entry list for the over 60 Men's Sabre for the Summer Championships. His birth date was March 1945. Then at Sacramento a couple of other strangers showed up.
The National Office will have to sort the fencers into the correct age group qualifer for this year where qualification will be by age group rather than in a combined Over 40 group. Up through this past year, they haven't really had to sort them out until the Summer Championships.
Another curiousity: the groups this year will be Over 40, 50-59, and Over 60. If you are in your 40's you have one event; If you are older you can choose to fence in two events in the same weapon, although only the age group will count towards team selection.
