I'm finding that replying to a thread and giving reputation are noticeably faster. I haven't noticed much of a speed difference when opening threads yet.

Just out of curiosity, was the old server heavily loaded or getting old and creaky?

There was something going on that was causing dumps of the forum software and creating files anywhere from 40MB to 170MB in size on the server.

Moved servers to one reputed to be very reliable, but I'm getting a lot of notices of database errors, more than the old host.

I'm continuing to monitor the situation and may need to move back as my old host is actually beefing up the server that fencing.net runs on and if they can provide me with the extra space, bandwidth, and RAM that I need they could win the business back. The good thing is that a copy of the database is still over there, so a move back could be done in a couple of hours instead of the time that it took with this move.

I've got plans to expand what Fencing.Net is doing and running a few more programs here, so we'll see what happens.

Craig

Haven't noticed any difference when opeing threads, however I have noticed warning messages (and other odd behavior) when checking the product review section (it may just be coincidence, however the problems started a couple of days ago).

I got a weird message when I tried to submit a score in the arcade. It told me basically that I wasn't "high enough in rank" (or something) to view that page. Weird....

I've noticed that the forum is now posting my thoughts even before I've typed them. So, yes, the speed has improved.

What thoughts?

( Kidding, I kid the King... )

Anyway, I post on several different computers, so any differences in speed I notice may be attributable to that rather than to the new server. ( The one I'm on today is noticeably faster; yesterday, on the computer at work, about as slow as it has always been. But the computer at work is Windows 95 and an old browser, and there may be hardware issues as well. )

Hence I can only say that the transition appears to have been seamless, aside from the down time for the switchover. Which is all I could ask, personally.

Server help volunteered:

BTW, Craig:

If you ever need some help moving stuff around or configuring server side stuff, I'd be happy to help. I've done it a couple times and managed it fairly smoothly. For instance, I moved FRED (and about 20 other sites) to a new server about two weeks ago, and I'll bet about a half-dozen or so people actually noticed.

I'll bet you have it all under control, but just in case its helpful.....

Hi!

I have not noticed anything special. That said, I am no computer specialist, so I would not really know what to look for. Also, I live in Europe and your server is presumably located in North America, so any performance changes might be masked by cross-atlantic traffic stuff.

Furthermore, I think that the original topic could well have been formulated as a multichoice poll to help us who do not know what to look for.

Have a nice time!

To paraphrase:
1. I don't have anything to contribute.
2. Your message does not please me.

I agree with Peter on all points. He said it better than I ever could.

Hi!

Now I noticed a irritating thing: when I click on the button to go to the first unread post, I still get linked to the thread start.

Have a nice time!

Having some issues with speed this morning. One minute pages will load at their usual speed ( on this computer ), albeit it seems a bit jerkier and staccato than usual. But every so often there'll be a period when pages take a LOOOOONG time to load---3, 4, 5 minutes. After 10 or 15 minutes it'll go back to normal.

Sunday morning, only a handful of people on the site.

Update: And about 1 1/2 hours into the session, a 15 minute rash of "Unable to find server" messages. Now it's back again....

I have found a few links were it still sends you to fencing101 for instance if you try to go to the photo gallery directly form the main page. otherwise everything seems good and in order. posts now appear much faster than before.
