Team Fencing?

Who does it? Is it fun? How does the scoreing work?
Do any of you do this in your clubs or Salle?

Your replys are appreciated.

Team fencing is fun (as long as your willing to forgive others for being human and losing a few touches <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> )

I've team fenced numerous time and I love being able to root others on and be rooted on myself. I like the team spirit, I think it's cool. Of course, if you went into the sport for the individual thing, I'm not sure it's for you.

The scoring is as follows. There's three fencers a team (and a substitute if you'd like). the fencers fence each member of the other team in a certain order (you can find it on the USFA website). The first bout stops when a fencer reaches 5, and the overall final score is 45. Each bout is to the next multiple of 5 after the winner's score of the last bout. bleh. So, hypothetically, if the score was 40-0 at the start of the last bout, one could catch up 40-45 and win the bout. that was a bit confusing, I'm sure someone else can explain it better.

Team fencing is a fabulous format. What's really neat about the scoring is that the team that's behind has an advantage. They don't have to stop and switch after scoring only five touches. If things are going well, they don't have to switch until the next multiple of five is reached and they're now in the lead! (or three minutes is up) There's a lot of strategy and many matches are decided 45-43.

Another unoffical format is used at the Mile Hi 4 weapon meet every year. The teams are composed of a male foilest, a female foilest, mixed epeest, and mixed sabreur. Each member of the team fences their counterpart on the other team to 5 points. I really like the format because it gives a chance to cheer on your teammates, and it tends to balance out the clubs in the area.

I know that we're socialized for team sports, and that human beings are social animals, but I've never really been into the team thing...especially in fencing. Team fencing seems a bit like trying to force square pegs into a round hole. It's an individual sport however you look at it. I'm expecting to see team chess next.

i think there's a place for team fencing. it seems to be up to the officials to determine whether or not they have the time to allow for team fencing at a particular event. it does allow for a less experienced fencer to participate in something they otherwise may not have had the opportunity to participate in. i don't know if there is a socializing factor involved other than it may be that you may have to speak to one another every once in a while, but i've never found the idea of socializing an antithesis to fencing. people need to communicate and speak. sometimes people need to be left alone, and that's part of communication also. i have not figured out the scoring details. i was more or less told to 'fence' and then when the bout was over to unhook the stuff, sit and wait for another bout. it sounds like it is a fun thing to do. maybe there should be more team events. what about, team nationals, and individual nationals, like separate events entirely. it's almost like a different sport altogether.

Greetings Arc-meister

Team format rules!. Though it is harsh. Gotta be really sure to place your best man ( that day, of course) as last man. Weak fencer MUST be sure to double as much when fencing a superior opponent ( this keeps the score close-- no sense tring to fence and lose five zip and letting the score get outta hand).
If you ever get six guys together give it a try..

Attila

Not socializing, Artist-Formerly-Known-As-Mango; socialized, in the behavioral sense---that is to say, we are "trained" by our upbringing, schooling, and social experiences to want and expect to do things in groups instead of as individuals. And very often this spills over into things which really aren't designed to be done in groups. Like fencing.

Team Fencing is fun. Haven't done any since I was a student but I enjoy the format. We were gonna put a Mens Epee team into the British Campionships this year however due to the journey time we were facing we never managed.

It's also a good fun formay.

RC will become famous soon enough
The Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario hosts a team event every year. Last November, there were over 300 fencers competing.
