[CFML] ISMAC Tournament Results

Hello,

I want to send a big thank you to the all the instructors and especially to
the participants who made this year the largest ISMAC ever! It was another
wonderful year of learning. I’m sure there will be more detailed reviews of
the workshop forthcoming, so I won’t tell you all the stories, but I did
want to make sure that the winners of the tournaments were known to all.

Saturday night was our first public Rapier/Smallsword tournament which was
run by the AHF. A big thank you to all the instructors for creating
interesting demos for the public, and especially to Sean and Guy for
jumping in when I needed another 10 minutes. The demos ran smoothly and the
public was very impressed. We educated over 100 new people about Western
Martial Arts!

The tournament was the best to date, with some very good fencing. Most
importantly, the participants maintained honor above the desire to win. A
special acknowledgement goes to Steve Watson in this department: he had a
bout that was going to be awarded to him, but he acknowledged a hit that
knocked him out of the tournament. So thank you Steve for being an example
of what these tournaments are truly about.

In the end, the final three each won a beautiful prize provided by Arms &
Armor. The winners were:

3rd Place – Russell Hogg (winning a buckler)
2nd Place – Cecil Longino (winning a dagger)
and
1st Place – Steaphen Fick (winning a smallsword)

Sunday night was the Singlestick Tournament run by Macdonald Academy of
Arms. This was again open to the public, so Maestro Paul Macdonald began
with a short presentation on the Singlestick. This was well received by the
audience and then the tournament began. A big thanks must go out to all of
those who participated in this tournament which was at the end of the 3rd,
12 hour day in a row; talk about stamina! The prize for first place (a
lovely singlestick) was provided by Macdonald Academy of Arms. The winners
were:

3rd Place – Troy Degerstrom
2nd Place – Steve Huff
and
1st Place – Scott Wilson

Of course there were amazing classes by the best instructors around and even
more fun after hours at the Radisson, but more on that to come. It was a
truly spectacular year.
ISMAC 2006 will be the first weekend of August (as always and I look
forward to seeing new faces mixed with the familiar ones. The infamous
statue awaits you!

Take care!

Jared Kirby
