    Eu não sou pessoa má!

Carbs are my downfall! I do what I can to cut back.
Plus, too much carbs, especially sugar, makes me sleepy.

    Is this going somewhere? Fine.

If it weren't for the fact that I so enjoy MEAT, I would consider being a vegetarian. But, hey, I like a good steak now and again. And again.

And if it weren't for the fact that I crave cheetos and salt bagels and chocolate when I have PMS, I might consider a low-carb diet.

Everything in moderation. Including moderation. (Hey, didn't someone have this as his sig till recently?)

Remember that the the diet industry is a multi-billion dollar industry.

Edit: Oh, and I enjoy meat too. A balanced diet is a good thing.

The idea behind these diets was that people were eating no fat no sugar foods that were loaded with simple carbs. this then like all diet ideas gets blown out of proportion and becomes an unhealthy thing on the market. All you need is not to overindulge in anything so that you get the proper amount of calories each day and exercise.

    You are my GODess!!!!

P.S. Please don't say balanced diet. It doesn't mean anything, like "same difference" or "pro-active" or "compassionate conservatism".

When I say balanced diet I'm referring to the food pyramid.

what if one is using the word 'diet' not to refer to a specific eating plan, but what one is actually eating? okay, that sounded better in my head. you aren't on a diet, but still have a diet.

    just eat your vegetables.

A reasonable low-carb diet is excellent at reducing cholesterol and body fat. I know this first hand, having seen my parents go on a moderate low carb diet. It is only because of this diet that they aren't on cholesterol-lowering drugs right now. (For the record, they also lowered their fat, carb, etc., intake somewhat.)

Any extreme diet, low fat, low carb, whatever, is bad for you. It just happens that low carb seems to be more popular right now.

The guys at T-mag call those "reduced carb" diets.

The things I hate the most are the "low-carb" things you shouldn't be putting into your body if you want to be healthy anyway.

    Low-carb brownies.

That's a slap in the face to dieting and gastronomic aesthetic!

    Low-carb beer. 3g of carbs, 94 calories.

Where do you think all those ****ing calories come from??? PROTEIN???

They make me want to vomit.

    Violently.

I agree, 99% of diet foods suck. The only time you should replace a food you eat with a different food that's supposed to be the same, except better for you, is when they're both actually food.

    So
white bread--> wheat bread is a good idea
brownies--> low carb brownies is a bad idea
soda-->diet/low-carb/zero calorie soda is a bad idea.

    in my opinion.

Bagels, pasta, rice, chicken, beef and fish. If you eat tons of that stuff and work out, you'll get huge.

When I went to the doctor for the first time in about seven years, he was concerned about my cholesterol, blood sugar and triglyceride levels; he put me on a low carb diet for a month to look at blood sugar levels. For three days, I thought I was a king - meat, eggs, cheese... ahhhh... for the next 27, I was miserable. It didn't help much that it was the middle of summer, but let me tell you - I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. Triglycerides and glucose went way down, but LDL cholesterol shot through the roof (HDL was up slightly, but not enough to offset the change in LDL). Putting me on a low fat diet had a predictably different effect - my cholesterol went way down (although the ratio between LDL and HDL got worse), but my glucose and triglycerides went up.

My doctor put me on niacin and gave me guidelines for food - limited sugar in fruits was allright, but avoid crap sugar - candy, soda, most "fruit" juices, that sort of thing. Basically, a sensible meal - grains, starches, meat, veggies. All of my blood test results started slowly heading towards normal. Increased the niacin, and the cholesterol was getting way better, although the triglycerides were still kind of high. Started fencing, and seven months later, everything is at or better than desirable levels.

I'm not slamming any particular diet or program, I'm just saying that for me, cutting back on portion size while eating a little bit of everything and exercise (fencing, whoo!) made all the difference; the niacin certainly helped my cholesterol, too. It took a while, but since I started fencing last September, I've lost about 35 pounds, and things are looking good. I'll never do a low-carb or low-fat diet again.

You're probably all going to roll your eyes at this, but I can't stress enough how important it is to go to the doctor - you may sometimes think you're doing yourself a favour by trying a particular workout regimen or diet, but you may be fooling yourself. Talk to a doctor.
