    Keystone State Games

I was on vacation in Pennsylvania last week and had a chance to watch some of the fencing events in the Keystone State Games. It was obviously not a USFA event in that there was no armorer to check and pass gear. They even tried to snatch me out of the spectator ranks to keep score and nobody there even knew I was a fencer. I did enjoy watching the events though (Open and Vetrans Epee). In particular there was a gentleman in his 70's named Pete Folgner. It was quite interesting to watch. He didn't move all that much but when he did he scored a touch and when he was attacked more often than not he would get a touch also. This gives me hope that age and guile can overcome youth and skill. I checked the results and he took a bronze btw.

And you didn't say hi! Who were you? I was the veteran woman in the sabre event, wearing the dreaded Transparent Visor mask.

The tournament was conducted as a USFA event--most local tournaments don't have weapons/mask check.

Pete is a cool guy. He did the sabre too.

Folgner is a legend to us older fencers and is a mainstay at tournaments. He, and a clubmate of mine, John Duryea, are inspirational in their skill and knowledge. Also...the Keystone Games were a great experience for a newbie like me.

Hi Peach! I was only there for about 2 hours on Saturday morning. I just saw a few of the Epee bouts. If you were there at that time I was the hairy looking guy with a beard and a pony-tail. I was talking with Bogdan Haiko from Corsair for a bit but mostly just hanging out watching.

Hey! I was there too. :-) Saturday for WF open, Sunday for WE open. Yeah, it was a smallish event, and I didn't get a new stamp on my mask or my lame, but it was really kind of neat to have the whole mini-Olympic atmosphere. The people there were also all delightfully friendly, and I got a chance to relax and chat with various friends, including the charming Mr. Folgner. It was also great to just run up 83 from Baltimore and be in York in about 30-40 minutes.

Hiya, Peach! Now I've finally got a face to go with your posts! I watched a few of your bouts Sunday, including the gold medal bout which was quite a lot of fun to see. I'm Lawson -- I was one of the 2 bronze medalists in WE. What was the name of the gentleman, a friend of yours, who was directing the WE pool that day? The one who looks kind of like Sean Bean? I know he posts here and am kicking myself for being so dreadful with names!

Congratulations on your medal! I wish I'd known that was you. I know exactly who you mean, and I've gone blank on his name/username. Shoot--maybe he'll read this and enlighten us.

Are the Keystone State Games open to non-PA residents (noting that fencerchica apparently lives in Maryland)?

Wish it hadn't been on the weekend I was in CO for Coaches College, otherwise I would have attended. Also wish the "State Games of America" (a biannual national-level competition for medalists from state games), which WAS in Colorado Springs the weekend I was there included fencing. Or that Garden State Games hadn't happened 2 weeks before I closed on my new house in New Jersey. Fates conspired to keep me out of any state games competitions this year.... :)

This year it was open to non-residents, though there was some discussion about whether the big championship trophies had to go to a state resident--dunno how that was resolved

It's one of the few events in the summer in our area, which is why I go

I went through that for the WF competition Saturday, it was pretty entertaining really. I believe at first they thought they could let me have the cup since I had, after all, been allowed to fence upon having paid my out-of-state fees. But when Mrs. Kane checked the Keystone Games rules to be sure, it turned out that the cup goes to the top-placing PA resident, along with a gold medal -- a second one though, with the top finisher getting to keep hers. (Whew! I could live without having to bring the cup back next year, but I would've been sad to get no medal!!) Both myself and the silver medalist were out-of-state, too.

Thanks!! :-D I really had a fun time, especially since epee is not my primary weapon and I had gone in with no expectations. (and therefore no stress, which was great)

Next time I see you, I'll be sure to say hello. :-)

This year the keystone games were opened up to several middle atlantic states that do not have state games, such as DE and MD. However although Maryland does not have a state game they still have a FENCING state championship, but it was stated that they were allowed to participate if they paid the out of state fee and they did.

Hi Peach- it was great to see you again, and nice meeting you fencerchica. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the events. From all that I've gathered, there were few complaints and it appeared to me that the event went quite smoothly. And I agree, the people were all very friendly- especially Pete "Ironman" Folgner, I wonder where he keeps all that chocolate he keeps giving out at tournaments....

Yeah, THAT was your username. I think having you compared to Sean Bean is what drove it out of my head.

    1. Kraft
    2. Beatey (sp?)
    3. Sher (sp?)
not sure of the rest the rest. and the spelling.

for the vet mens epee, i think stoner, and folgner were in the top 3, but not sure of anyone else.

Nice meeting you too, daveappr! LOL... this is great: next time I forget your name, I can refer back to this thread.

Pete Folgner always gives out chocolate? Damn, and here I thought I was special!! When I see him, I always remember a time when I was fencing a C (I only have my D in foil so far) who was at least a foot taller than me, at White Rose in York last April. I'd met and chatted with Peter a few minutes earlier, and when I started my bout, he came over and sat in my corner, giving me encouragement and really good advice. I was quite touched, and it was very helpful.

I pray there is no link - as gross and sweaty as I was after fencing I'm hoping the camera developed serious technical difficulties and the pictures are never seen again. BTW Peach, it was great seeing you there. It's been quite some time since I had the pleasure of seeing you lay the smack down on all the saber men.
