Array Large non-NAC tournaments Besides the NACs, which US tournaments are guaranteed to be really good?
Also, what are satellite world cup events? "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moment, lost in time. Gone, like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die" -Phil Ken Sebben -

Also, what are satellite world cup events? Satellites are kind of like B level World Cups. If you finish in the top 8, you get FIE points. They're a little more laid back because they're B level, but there are still a lot of good fencers there. There are good ones in Amsterdam for MF and MS and I think London for MF and WF. Copenhagen has one as well, I think.
Dual in the Desert is apparently really good in the US, but I've never actually been. -

Array Duel in the Desert.
Pomme de Terre.
Mr Ma Cup.
The Cherry Blossom Open in DC and Big Apple Open in NYC are usually strong, too.
I've heard good things about the Crescent City Open and Long Beach Invitational, but never attended, given the distance.

Array Cool Non-Nac Tournaments Remenyik - Nothwestern University 10/22-23
It's a Womens and Mixed tournament. Last year they had 75 for Mixed foil, 69 for Mixed Epee. Both were A events. All of the others had in the 40's for participation, except for Women's Sabre which had 26.
All of the events were at least A2 events. It is a well run event. I think foil and sabre are on Saturday and epee is on Sunday, but I'm not positive on that as our division schedule is not out yet.

Array The Rose Condon in Bossier City, LA, (near Shreveport) is usually a good draw. The last tournament (February 2005) had A2 events in all but Womens Foil and Womens Sabre. http://www.southwestfencing.org/04-0...RoseCondon.htm
In 2006 the tournament will be January 7-8. But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. -

Array We are planning to make the 2006 Cherry Blossom Open a super event. It will take place at the University of Maryland Reckord Armory where the 2005 MAS were held. This venue is big enough to hold the Summer Nationals and has great lighting plus ac. Stayed tuned for full details! -

Array I agree that the Remenyik (Northwestern University in Chicago) is a great tournament. I have been attending every year since 1990 (I have been flying in for it every year since I moved to NYC 6 years ago). Men's epee was an A-4 last year. The prizes are great as well... a long sword for the champion, short sword for second, battle axes for 3rd's, and 5-8 get daggers.
The Pomme de Terre is nice and is usually well run.
The Phoenix Cup this year was terrific. They did a fantastic job for their first year of an event so large (they rented out the Mesa convention center for it).
If you live up north, check out the Hero's Open in London Ontario. This event is so great the USFA used to designate it and give points to those that did well. -
Anyone tie this into Google maps yet? -

Unfortunately, the London Hero's Open is now just a shadow of its former self. Not that I wouldn't mind once again seeing a flood of new American and European faces at the tournament, but I wouldn't want anyone being disappointed after coming a long way for what might not be the strongest of tournaments. By coming though, you could help contribute towards making the tournament strong once again. -

I'm not sure what the offense was, but the fencer involved has a reputation for having a temper. Fail until you succeed!

Nellya Fencers hosted an A4 mixed sabre tournament as part of a sabre camp in Atlanta last month. I think it's going to be an annual event. -

Array I used to got to London Heroes when I was in college (early 90s), and it was exceptional.
I went back to it last year, and it was a nice tournament, but not as impressive as it used to be. I wish I could remember the numbers to give a more precise idea of what we're talking about... I think there were about 20 pistes, with maybe half of them grounded.... Can anyone help me out here?
Anyway, I am sure that our Canadian friends (and those of us who frequently fence in Canada) would appreciate increased attendance at London Heroes this year, so it can be restored to its former glory.
As far as big tournaments go, how about the Temple Open? Back-in-the-day, I had heard it was pretty big... "All things must pass. All things must fade away." - George Harrison -
The phoenix cup was a very well run tournament indeed. Please please all of you, regardless of what weapon or level you fence consider yourselves cordially invited.
Yours truly,

The Temple Open is indeed a very strong event, but the catch is that you have to be in college and a 'full-time, matriculated, undergraduate student' (from the flyer for last year's event); the formal title is the Temple University Annual Collegiate Open. You do not have to be NCAA-affiliated, though. But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. Also, what are satellite world cup events? in our area, definitely the rose condon memorial as some one else mentioned as well as crescent city open. not to many opportunities for A rated tournaments down here... -

Array The temple open which I attended for the first time this past year was indeed alot of fun. Some of the refereeing was...frustratingly interesting. But There were plenty of solid refs for the later rounds and finals. I also really enjoyed the format, with two rounds of pools meaning such a long drive wasn't wasted on too little fencing.
As mentioned tho it hits a snag at least in terms of this thread because it is restricted to collegiate fencers. But if you're eligible, it's definitely worth checking out.
Does anyone know of a website for the remenyik? With past results maybe? "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"

I hope it's annual because it was AWESOME!!!!!!
Unfortunately, DFP is an epee fencer. Maybe you should pick up saber?
DFP:
MY club's tournaments (you know who we are) ar starting to get pretty large. The next one is August 13th, and you can pre register on askfred.net. I know we are also closer to you than many of the good tournaments in the country. Certainly not pomme de Terre and Duel in the Desert level yet, but closer to you and working on it. I think there are 22 people pre registered for epee so far. Good luck in your search!
