| Howdy Hi,
I fence foil but only because thats what beginners have to start on at our club. I am built for epee and hate ROW so naturally....
Anyways, Im having some problems with keeping my right <attacking> arm too close to my body. So if you know any helpful hints, please drop a line.
Also our instructor taught us to be in en garde in the 6th line, but it has taught me to be way overprotective of my fourth line, so any hints on killing this habit would help too. |

| I'm not an epeeist, though I imitate one on occasion, so any advice I might give you woud be wrong, but welcome to the forum!

| Fourth line and you. Hi I'm new too.
If you find in epee you are to protective of your fourth line, try using every other parry but 4 while you're just bouting with somebody, don't even tell them, just give it a shot.
Maybe that will help, if not, sorry.

| As for keeping your arm out I teach my students that if they hold their opposite hand (left in your case) flat like I was gonna put a $5 bill in it. then hold it against there side width wise. their elbow should then touch the thumb but not be pressing it over top of the palm. it gives a rough estimate for the distance you can check each time you go en guard.
As to the over protecting 4 problem I wouldn't worry to much as that is the easiest line to hit/see on a right handed fencer. Since you are new to the sport other less experienced fencers are going to attack that alot anyhow. Just make sure you are not using a hard parry 4 to clear everything like a windshield wiper.
Hope this helps a little and welcome to the boardl.

| Welcome to the forum!
I had the same problem with my arm (left in my case) when I started to fence. The problem sort of fixed its self as I fenced more and my arm became stronger, but I happens every now and then when my arn is really tired. So just work on your arm stength. Good luck
