| Penalty cards This is an odd question, perhaps, but are there any regulations about the size, etc. of the actual penalty cards used by referees that I am unaware of?
The instructor who certified me to be a ref made her own, and cleverly printed the penalty chart in miniature on the yellow card before having them laminated. I was thinking of doing the same thing, and then it occured to me that perhaps the cards themselves have to be a particular size or something.
Do most refs just make their own? Do the FIE, USFA, USFCA, or any vendors actually sell them?
Curious.

| Vendors sell them. My club has a couple of sets.
I OTOH just use field expedients: rectangles of colored pasteboard clipped from, variously, a notebook cover, the end tab of the box in which a propane torch came, and a bit of cardboard blackened with magic marker.
Not that I've had occasion to use them yet, of course. For all the emphasis the ref exam puts on the awarding of penalties, I seldom see transgressions of the rules in sabre. Maybe the occasional crossover. |

| There is no rule on size or even that you have them. I have been at tournaments with no cards. They would just say 'Yellow Card' or 'Red Card'. You could have just one card, half red, half yellow on one side and black on the other and you just show the portion of the card. It could be 1" by 2", just enough to see the color.
Given that, see above. If you have them I would laminate them, the suggestion of the penalty chart is good, it should be small enough to fit in a pocket.

| Most stores with a craft section will sell some thin sheets of what I'll call "contruction paper made of foam". I made my cards from that and it's great because you can crumple 'em up and when you pull them out they're ready to go. My pockets always have too much in them.
But I don't know if you can print on it or not. *shrug*

| I use yellow, red, and black floppy disks. If nothing else, people tend to argue calls less because they're shocked and trying to figure out what I'm showing them. |

| I like the floppy disks idea, but it's been taken now. Perhaps CDs...
I've also seen a director hold up the scoresheet and say: "Mr X, this is now colored yellow". |

| The reason I made my cards the size I did was after talking to referees included my wife and daughter and came up with that size for the easy of fitting in pockects and in getting out of the different pockets Most refs will have them in different pockets plus the weight., snd they are lamaited.

| This is what I use. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and visit the area where they sell countertops. There should be a large rack of laminate samples. I use Wilsonart 1595-60 Black (black), D307-60 Hollyberry (red), and D341-60 Marigold (yellow). Very durable and very free.

| Some of my wife's co-workers work in leather. They made me some sets of leather cards.
The black card is from shark skin. |

i heard about that at nationals and thought that was a neat idea.
vendors usually carry them for around 1 buck a set or so. sometimes whoever is in charge of the USFA weights/shims also gives a complimentary set out.

| I think cards of about a foot and a half by 3 feet should be more than large enough to be seen and a lot more fun to give out.

-B | Yes, I'm that guy. Been using them since 2003 or so. Don't know anyone else who have floppy disk cards (except for telkanuru, now).

| Mybe theme music and a light show too! perhaps something like these envision your own music as you see fit.
"Fencer You have earned a YELLOW CARD!"
"The Fencer Has recieved a RED CARD!"
"You are a dishonor to the sport fencer, for you have been given a Black Card!"
I figure if this works out it will be much more fan freindly and better for TV than all these stupid rule changes.

| Going with broncofencer's idea, maybe there's a tie-in with "You are the weakest link!"
At least somebody has figured out a use for leftover floppy disks...
