College admissions? So I'm applying as a spring transfer student to 7 or 8 schools and want to find out how much fencing might help my admission chances. I've been fencing for about 8 years (age 19 now) but have little competition experience other than small local events - the only thing I'd have to vouch for me would be a recommendation from my current and maybe a former coach.
If I were to contact the coaches at some of these schools and express an interest in their programs, do you think there's any chance they might help to sway the admissions comittee in my favor? -

If you're going for a spring transfer admission, I'd suspect that few coaches would be able to help you (but that shouldn't stop you from contacting them directly and trying). I also don't know the NCAA's specific stance of spring transfers, since it's mid season. Most likely you wouldn't be allowed to fence until next year. What I do recommend is to contact coaches and express interest. -

Array contacting the coach will give you a much better idea of how likly you are to fence, and it can't do anything BAD for your chances of admission--- it might not help, but it can not hurt............
the more information everyone has, the better off you are..... -
Are you talking about schools with NCAA teams? Then it can't hurt. Are you talking about USACFC or unaffiliated schools? I can't imagine it would have much effect at all. -
Ouch. All but 1 (Vassar) of the NCAA schools I'm applying to are women only teams. -

Array If there is a men's club, it still would make sense to contact someone at the school. Anytime you have an insider pulling for you, you've improved your chances considerably.

Yeah, I guess there's always the chance that somone involved in fencing is on the admissions committee. -
unless you're applying for a varsity team, a decently rated fencer and the team has a spot for you, or you're a just a really good fencer, fencing won't help you much.
its nice to put on the application, shows dedication, but fencing itself probably won't get you anywhere. -
