| Order of Selohaar I just discovered this rather intriguing site earlier today.
It is as far as I know unique in professing a serious study of Fencing, Chivarly, Mysticism and Magick [sp]. I am curious as to the authenticity and origin of their practices.
They apparantly do Medieval & Early Rennaisance period fencing, study Chivalric virtues, and profess a pagan magickal system similar to Wiccan practices.
Very odd, eh?

| It's interesting. I don't think it's really my thing, but look at some of the armour they've got - it must take quite a bit of work to keep it in good shape - you can really see clear reflections in some of the pieces.
Cool link, Veritas!

| Sounds like a cult.
But they do fencing.
So they are a cult.

| They are strange and I think they confuse everything...but I do not think so that they fecne. They have shining armors e.t.c but they are far away even from the classical fencing.

| Interesting and strange.
But some may find a new home here. I mean, I'd say: chacun son truc!

| Ooh... I like this! I took up the Code of Chivalry on my sixteenth birthday. I also considered fasting.. but that never went through. (I'd miss eating a bit..)
Anyway.. I do like this, thank you so much for showing it off!

Their founder Christian Tobler is apparantly a published author on german longsword and a serious student of the old knightly arts.
But 'tis strange indeed. Looks a little like what the SCA would be if it took itself far too seriously. |

Really though, I have met SCA guys who seem to take it too much to heart, methinks.
Maybe I should introduce them to these fellers.

| Well, the whole 'magick' thing is a bit odd, but I suppose no more so than, say, some of the Freemason rites.
These things exist on a continuum. Have you seen some of the really funny LARPs? Essentially D & D games acted out. This one is pretty famous: http://www.milkandcookies.com/links/9271/ |

I'd laugh but I'm so utterly confused by what I just saw. What the heck was that guy in the kilt doing? It looked like he was trying to egg the 'monster' to death.
LARPs weird me out. I feel that they are best illustrated by the cartoon at the following link. http://www.hoodyhoo.com/kodt04.htm

| Mmmmm... armor... maille... weapons... But no hotties in sight. I can usually find a few at my local SCA events. (And they don't *all* take it too seriously, really.)
Also, the last pictures posted were from 2003. It seems chivalry is in fact dead.

| I think he was throwing beanbags which are meant to represent a spell-weapon. He keeps shouting "Lightning bolt! Lighning bolt!"
There's another one which shows a woman using a "speak to the dead" spell to get information from a bunch of players who have been "killed". She is just soooo serious about it, too. I wish I could find that clip again. |

Order of Selohaar www.selohaar.org/ | Christian Tobler is probably the foremost english speaking expert on the German Longsword Tradition of Liechtenauer. He studies extant manuscripts from ms3227a (1389) up to late renaissance and early modern longsword texts.
Don't criticize his fencing until you meet him. He isn't a modern fencer, and he freely admits that. He's actually a rather pleasant fellow.
In none of the conversations I've had with him has he spoken about his religion. And he doesn't come across as a 'fringie' or anything like that.
Take his religion apart from his swordsmanship, he knows his stuff. |
