Vancouver World Cup - men's & women's epee results Canadian Fencing Federation
Press release Triple bronze for Canadians at Vancouver fencing Peter Bakonyi International World Cup
Sunday, July 10, 2005
VANCOUVER – Vancouver has been overrun with swordplay as over 200 fencers from 22 countries have gathered to compete in the last world cup of the season before the October World Championships. Saturday’s action saw 3 Canadians picked up bronze medals.
Sherraine MacKay of Brooks, Alta., and Catherine Dunnette of Calgary shared the bronze medal podium in the women’s epee while Vancouver’s Laurie Shong came out of retirement to win the bronze in the men’s epee event.
#1 seed MacKay’s road to the medal round was smooth sailing with victories over Jess Beer from New Zealand 15-9, Alexie Rubin from the USA 15-8 and Bianca DelCarretto of Italy 15-10. In the semis she faced Sophie Lamon from Switzerland and despite a late rally MacKay fell 15-13.
Dunnette defeated two Canadians, Emiko Ihara 15-14 and Julie Leprohon 15-10 followed by her biggest victory of the day over #3 seed Sonja Tol 15-13 of the Netherlands. Catherine put up a good fight against #2 seed Cristiana Cascioli of Italy but lost 15-12 in her semifinal match.
Cristiana Cascioli beat Sophie Lamon 15-12 to capture gold in the final.
On the men’s side, Laurie Shong had a wonderful surprise steaming rolling his way to the bronze after not picking up a sword for a little over a year. Shong’s only blemish came against Seth Kelsey from the USA falling 15-13.
Seth Kelsey went on to win the gold defeating Bas Verwijlin of the Netherlands 15-12 while Benjamin Solomon from the USA shared bronze with Shong.
Other notable Canadian results came from Magda Krol who made the quarterfinals in women’s epee while Igor Tikhomirov also reached the quarterfinals of the men’s epee event.
The women’s sabre and men’s foil events will be held today.

Array I'm stunned to see that WS pool results are already posted...and within an hour of today's start time...the DE tables are already on line.
And yet, according to the NoahZ theory of on-line results, the only reliable way for the organizers to do this was for me to drive to Vancouver and volunteer to do it myself!
How can the Peter Bakonyi folks be so much cleverer than the Vegas Gran Prix organizers? I'm nearly speechless.

well everyone knows that canadians have a much stronger tradition of volunteering and community spirit - not like you self obsessed americans -

Array The Canadians should remember that the only reason they're not part of the US is that John Q. Adams had an irrational phobia about polar bears.

Array The Americans like to forget we burned down the White House, had Michigan surrendered to us and that we made it as far as New Orleans. In typical Canadian fashion, our politicians gave all the land back.... yessss let's just pretend it never happened....
All teasing aside about history.... the World Cup was a great event. I was impressed by how many Americans came from Nationals, to compete and then headed back to Nationals again. Wow! Great job.
USA women took 1st & 2nd. today in Sabre, beating out two Russians, that took bronze. Results should be up, as all the events finished early today. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -
Great job by Seth Kelsey and our other men's epeeists. Do you know which women won the event? I'm guessing it was Mariel and Sada, but who finished where? -

There was some really great fencing there. For my first world cup (that I got to fence in), it was a lot of fun!
The venue for the finals was excellent, though I could have done without the Chinese acrobats. Don't let 'em drop it. Don'tlet'emdropit. Stop it... bebop it.

Array Is it posted? The DE page...of which I was so laudatory hours ago...has not yet been updated with any of the DE bouts. Array I saw that the women were ranked in the right order, but the score for the last bouts weren't posted.
By the way Geordie.... your favorite woman epeeist is a real sweetheart. It was really nice of her to translate for the other athletes to ensure they understood what was going on. I saw that and thought she had a lot of class. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -
Where did you see the final order posted? It doesn't seem to be on that site. -
mariel, was loosing in the finals 14-10 or 14-9, and she came back and won 15-14 vs Sada. -
and that we made it as far as New Orleans.
Where you did so well we wrote the song about it.
Which was then parodied by Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie, but if you claim burning thw White House*, then the American victory at the Plains of Abraham was a pretty good one.
Good fencing.

The venue for the finals was excellent, though I could have done without the Chinese acrobats. Wasn't it a repetition of the (american) Div I Nationals? -

And Sada was in the top position before the match.... up until the end, it looked like she was going to continue to sail on through until Mariel poured it on and took the gold from her.... both are amazing athletes!

Array Congratulations to the organizers of the Vancouver WC. Since you were so close to the US border we were able to get over for the weekend. The epee final was just fantastic, and the lion dance by the chinese was fun and exciting, making a great show. The CHan center was beautiful and it was great to have the event done in such a first class manner.
By the way, your city is beautiful! -

By the way, your city is beautiful! It really was a great venue... wasn't the view beautiful from the Chan Centre? I've lived here all my life, but ever so often I am blown away by the some of the incredible views in this city. I’ll post pictures of the event when I get my film developed.
I have never been to the Chan Centre, and really like the design and layout. The athletes and their ability to fence so well, on stage, in front of a crowd under bright lights also impressed me.
Bas Verwijen from the Netherlands impressed me a great deal. He was the only one without a coach present. He spent his time backstage mediating. When he fenced he never let his opponent get more than a point or two ahead… He was incredibly focused and disciplined as he fenced. He was amazing.
Laurie Shong (our home town favourite) was also amazing. Coming out of retirement for this tournament and taking third??? Wow… even though he’s a member of a club I frequent, I have never seen him fence…. He was so impressive… what a fencer! And one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.
My favorite part was when he gave the director a black card.... okay the director dropped it and Laurie handed it back with some comment.... it introduced a little humour in the match.
One of the advantages in working as a volunteer is you get to see how athletes behave on and off the strip. I must say the fencers who came to Vancouver were a great bunch of athletes. I had an fantastic weekend!

Too bad the event was so weak. Men's Epee in particular had nobody there. But that is to be expected in the post-Olympic year. Similar Threads -
