Saber Gran Gala in Rome on RaiSportSat this Sunday: ask ESPN for a rebroadcast...

Who said that fencing cannot be spectacular and attract a large audience?

Here is the review of last night performance in Rome from the FIS website (nice photo!)

LARGE AUDIENCE AND GREAT SABER IN PIAZZA FARNESE FOR THE ENZO MUSUMECI GRECO MEMORIAL - SUNDAY, JULY 10 ON RAISPORTSAT AT 10 PM

7-8-2005, Rome - Great success with the public last night, July 7, with a spectacular saber performance in Piazza Farnese. A large crowd of more than a thousand filled the square in front of the French Embassy. Many present were new to fencing but had great fun in following the saber challenge between the Italian team (led by the CT Christian Bauer) whose shining star was Aldo Montano, and the international team made of saber champions from Hungary, Romania, and France.

The match to 90 touches was won 90-86 by Italy. In the mixed Italian team the MVP was the Neapolitan Gioia Marzocca so voted by a special jury...

Some of the fencers were visibly affected by the large crowd, the stage, and the impressive backdrop of their performance, and they took on the challenge against the Rest of the World with a spirit of friendly competition, yet they did not want to look bad in the process...

Before the start of the tournament a minute of silence was observed as a sign of respect for the victims of the terrorist attacks in London.

ITALY beats Rest of the World 90-86.

Here are the detailed scores of the bout:

Gioia Marzocca-Andrea Pelei (Rom) 5-2
Ilaria Bianco-Anne-Lise Touya (Fra) 10-8
Alessandra Lucchino-Edina Csaba (Hun) 15-12
Aldo Montano-Zsolt Nemcsik (Hun) 20-18
Giampiero Pastore-Mihai Covaliu (Rom) 24-25
Luigi Tarantino-Boris Sanson (Fra) 27-30
Bianco-Pelei 28-35
Marzocca-Csaba 40-38
Lucchino-Touya 45-40
Pastore-Nemcsik 50-45
Montano-Sanson 55-50
Tarantino-Covaliu 60-56
Bianco-Csaba 65-60
Lucchino-Pelei 70-68
Marzocca-Touya 75-69
Pastore-Sanson 80-73
Tarantino-Nemcsik 85-77
Montano-Covaliu 90-86

TV Broadcast: - Excerpts of the bouts of the Memorial Enzo Musumeci Greco will be broadcast by RaiSportSat Sunday, July 10 between 10 an 10:30 pm

Get your satellite TV and Tivo machines synchronized with Italian time and RaiSportSat this coming Sunday (4 to 4:30 pm EC Summer Time), or better yet, contact ESPN to get the rights to rebroadcast...

I'll ask our friends in Italy if they can make a DVD of this event as presented by RaiSportSat. I don't know about copyrights and such though...

If anyone can get the satellite feed of RaiSportSat, then it can be recorded or downloaded for personal use, I guess.

But, in my opinion, the best would be for the likes of ESPN to negotiate with RaiSportSat the rights for rebroadcast for everyone's enjoyment in between poker and hot dog eating contests.

This may not be much

http://ansa.it/main/notizie/videonew...08_700710.html

but it's a snippet of Montano, Pastore, and a pretty lady

Montano: Glad to see that a program like the evening Saber Gran Gala in Piazza Farnese could attract such a crowd... He advocates more of these types of events to get the word around and to entertain and attract the public.

Pastore: As the captain of the Italian saber team he makes a summary of the WC season and talks about the coming Leipzig World Championship in October.

Pretty lady: She just fences for fun and enjoys every minute of it...

I'm trying to get a bit more than this
