    Fencing still in 2012 Olympics

Guess only baseball and softball were cut from the 2012 Olympics, fencing made the cut! Interestingly the numerical results of the voting will never be revealed so we will never know whether fencing barely made the cut or whether it survived by a comfortable margin. Now if only we could have a couple of athelete/metal spots from those big roster events so we could fence ALL the events...

Honestly... I don't even know what "softball" is. I read the article and I was surprised to learn that karate wasn't an olympic sport yet.

This is not the end. Fencing survived the confidence vote but there will be more to this scheme to trim the "fat".

I just read that the PGA and the European PGA do not want golf included the Olympics. They have stated blatantly that it would take away from their marquee events every four years:
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...ympic.new0606/

Both the PGA and the European PGA tours are against its inclusion in the Olympics, since once every four years it would take the spotlight off one of their regular events. And even Fay, who is also executive director of the USGA, admits, "The Olympics should be the pinnacle of a sport, and no one could say that about golf without having his nose grow. But if tennis is in, golf should be in."
My votes on Rugby or Karate.

I don't think fencing will ever be removed.
It seen as too cultured and elegant.
It gives the Olympics more class.

We dodged the bullet this time around, but if international participation, and more importantly, growth in the US market doesn't continue expand, fencing will be on the chopping block soon enough.

No softball!!! What?! Why?!?! It's basically a game of baseball that's higher paced and involves strategic hitting rather than brute force hitting like in baseball. It's a lot less boring than baseball. Plus, America kicked a** in it.

Well, crap, I guess competitive softball will still only go as high as college now...

Anyway- hurray for Fencing!!! I read somewhere that it's one of the few sports that has survived since the first modern Olympics. They can't take it out.

What do you mean no new sports? Now they will vote on the 2 sports to replace Baseball and Softball.

Nope, they won't because it's already done and they said no to all the potential new sports... so the total number of sports will be 26. That's it.

(I read that in the website of lequipe.fr this morning but I can't find it anymore!)

I've finally got the link (it's in French sorry):

They may or may not be putting in two new sports but IOC has not said anything about the number of athletes in the Games. Everyone here knows that IOC has put in a cap on the number of athletes in the Games (i.e. no women's team foil/sabre competition). Two new sports will be subjected to this and that could mean some reshuffling to keep the numbers level. Plus, gender equality plays a factor and things get a little interesting.

I also read that they have already voted and will not be adding any new sports for 2012. It was expected that they would add squash and karate but they instead voted not to add anything. The article I read (? on espn or cnnsi.com) said that they might be giving existing sports extra events/medals/athlete spots since cutting baseball and softball puts them under their quota/caps that we have heard so much about. Specifically one official said they wanted to possibly add more women's soccer teams to the field.

    THE BIG QUESTION!!!!!
Who do we write or email to start the campaign to add the extra two medal/events for fencing??? This is probably a golden opportunity and it seems like we have a very strong case for fencing and shouldn't waste any time here!!!!!

I have a feeling there will be ALOT more to this story to unfold. We have a secret vote for each sport and they aren't releasing the numbers for the vote? I'm sorry, that seems wrong and given the past performance of the IOC, that is just a carte blanc for abuse. If this is the way it's going to be done, fine but it needs to be a little more open.

Thank you for correcting me. The article I read was from USA Today and appears now to be out of date. I have now read the article in CNN.

To be specific, America kicked the world around like it was a superball. It isn't worth having as an Olympic sport right now, because the US practicly ought to have a bye into the finals. It's not an internationally competitive sport at the moment.

In addition, I think softball is currently broken. Pitching has far too much power, and the number of hits in a game is pathetic. The mound needs to be moved back, to give the batters a better chance at hitting the ball, and to introduce some more strategy in baserunning and the like. Oh well.

Also, I can't speak for the major leagues, but the 2005 College World Series champions plays mostly small ball.
