| We Got The Olympics!!!!!! Woot, as I believe you say in the US, woot!
And I live in Crystal Palace where there is an international sports centre where at least the swimming is likely to take place, so there's the value of my flat rising up! And other less selfish celebrations...
The Red Arrows, a famous stunt aeroplane team, have just flown over head trainling celebratory red white and blue smoke, it's all very exciting here in London.
Yay, I can go and see the fencing! Live! *jumps up and down waving weaselly paws*

| yes, it is going to be in the main olympic park. they originally planned to have it at alexandra palace, but moved to the main park, when they were told to go a bit more compact. |

| Congratulations. For some reason, I put Paris as my top choice (not due to preference). I had London at a very close second, though.
I'm sure that London will be a superb host. I hope that the upcoming vote on each sport doesn't mar what will no doubt be an otherwise excellent Olympic Games.

| Congrats to London. I'm sure they'll do a great job.
... but some comments on the BBC board are really insane (especially about the French) and I think that's ashame.

| I hear that the IOC picked London because they plan to build huge for the Olympics. Literally everything from scratch, and they don't plan on using any existing facilities around the city. Virtually every venue will be in a new facility, built in the east end of London which is a little bit run down. Alittle bit of renewal in the area which sounds great! The CBC said that local merchants might be filing complaints or civil suits cause they think it will effect there business? I don't know what that is about...it sounds like a blessing to get the Olympics for local business.
Congratulations to London.

| Oh, and I hear that it will be Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee that year, and will tie in nicely with the Olympics....she will be opening them, maybe the 2010 in Vancouver too?

So it's not very dignified and I wouldn't condone it but people just want to get back at him for effectively saying we were all a bunch of losers.
Civiltech, you are right, a bit of urban regeneration wouldn't come amiss in the East End. It is traditionally a poorer area, and the Docklands area close to it, whilst it was in its heyday when shipping trade was the main way of getting goods anywhere, has suffered from air freight in the last century so ports and dockside warehouses in many places lie derelict.
I haven't heard about objections from local businessmen though - would have thought they'd love it.
Scurius Rex, you are living out an unhelpful stereotype of Americans!!

| Yes, it is unhelpful when such people add to the stereotype that Americans don't know their geography. After all, everyone knows that London is in Kentucky.

The Canadian Olympic committe just CLAIMED that London was in England so we could host two Olympics back to back. Winter in BC, then summer in Ontario. Silly. Also: Paris is in Ontario. (Near Hamilton, I believe) This was the back up plan in case the initial ploy didn't work.
