| Saber Gran Gala as a counterpoint to ESPN hotdogs eating contest? An interesting event to promote fencing from the FIS website http://www.federscherma.it/news.asp?27716 GRAND SABER WITH THE MEMORIAL ENZO MUSUMECI GRECO IN PIAZZA FARNESE, ROME, THURSDAY, JULY 7 -- ALDO MONTANO ON THE STRIP
7-5-2005, Rome - With the beautiful backdrop of the French Embassy in Piazza Farnese, an extraordinary saber evening outdoors, Thursday, July 7, at 9:30 pm, will present many super champions in this weapon like Aldo Montano, current Olympic champion, the Romanian Olympic champion in Sidney 2000, Mihai Covaliu, the current Olympic vice-champion, the Hungarian Zsolt Nemcsik, and others.
Organizer is Renzo Musumeci Greco who wanted to dedicate this first Trophy Diunamai to the memory of his father Enzo. With the cooperation of FIS a regulation strip will be set up in Piazza Farnese over a stage 20 m x 7 m to host sabreurs and sabreuses in a relay of 90 touches over 18 bouts.
Today, at the press conference called by Renzo Musumeci Greco announcing this program also two well known evening TV announcer, Paola Saluzzi and Marco Franzelli were in attendance. The two personalities have joined the Sala d'Armi Musumeci Greco, after discovering the beauty of fencing as adults.
Other people attending the press conference were Ezio Rinaldi, vice president of the FIS, Christian Bauer, Technical Director of the national saber program together with Aldo Montano, Giampiero Pastore, Gioia Marzocca, Alessandra Lucchino and Ilaria Bianco, and the international referee Martina Ganassin.
This event is part of a series of events promoted by the administration of the City of Rome, both cultural (exhibit at the National Library) and films dedicated to fencing and duels. The Italian team will line up Aldo Montano, Luigi Tarantino, Giampiero Pastore, Gioia Marzocca, Alessandra Lucchino, and Ilaria Bianco. The Rest of the World team will line on the strip super champions like the French Boris Sanson and Anne Lise Touya, the Romanians Mihai Covaliu and the sabreuse Andrea Pelei, the Hungarians Zsolt Nemcsik and Edina Csaba.
The evening will be taped by RaiSport.
The relay tournament will be preceded by an exhibition of competitive fencing with the youngest (1996-1997-1998) fencers of the Accademia Musumeci Greco.
Someone should write ESPN that there will be an interesting videotape worth showing against the hotdog eating contest... |

| AH!, Gladius, your post is quite interesting and fascinating... but, as you caould tell by yourself, nobody really cared about it here...
Maybe they're too interested in hotdog eating, no matter what they write elsewhere.
And I'd like to start a little provocation in saying that, maybe many peole don't even know where Rome is...

| Well, hey, if ESPN isn't gonna show it, perhaps one of our Italian comrades can tape it off the Raisport broadcast for us to see! |

| I would love for ESPN to show this, but the fact of the matter is this event has no appeal to anyone but fencers. A) No one knows who these people are B) No one understands whats going on, and theres not anyone who can explain it halfway decently. (Im reminded of that woman doing commentary for the olympics, who may have been perfectly knowlegeable, but couldnt spit out the damn words if her life depended on it) C) ESPN has no incentive to show this. Their ratings are good as they are, and theyre not going to show a more obscure sport that cant be instantly comprehended by the public, i.e. hot dog eating.
There is an inherent problem with sports whos greatness lies in subltety (sp?) |

| Does sond like a cool event though. Something like this in public would really help to promote the sport, if we cant get ourselves on TV. |

| Frighteningly enough, I saw mention of that hotdog eating contest in the sports section of several different newspapers. Can't say the same for fencing since the Olympics. |

| The local news in Sacramento follwed a 30 sec segment on fencing with the local log chopping competition. *sigh* its depressing to get lumped together with fatty lumberjacks in plaid outfits. |

| Would have been great to see, it's a really spectacular location. And I used to live just round the corner from there. Those were the days.
Interesting that Usmanov in his manifesto for the European Federation elections stressed tv coverage and the intention to promote this kind of event.
