I found this bit interesting. Fencing great Aldo Nadi tells the tale of his first duel with an Italian fencing critic. It makes me wonder how I'd feel in his situation. At this point, Nadi was already a champion, but even he realized the gravity of fencing in a life-or-death situation and the differences involved.
