| Leave the rain coat at home. It was 101 degrees yesterday and forecast to be 100 today.
I'd recommend bringing your shoes, mask and (for foil & sabre) your lame as carry-on and checking the rest. There are plenty of vendors but you don't want to be wearing new shoes on the strip or buying a bunch of new equipment if yours gets lost. The airlines should reimburse you if the gear doesn't get there when you do but you'll still need to put everything on your credit card. |

| i went to jo's for the first time this year, which was my first experience flying to a competition. i carried my shoes, lame, glove, and mask in my carry on bag, which wasn't too bad. the mask was the only thing which took up alot of space, but the only other things i had in my carry on were a cd player, book, and everyday needs (toothbrush, ect). it all fit in a backpack, even though it was a little heavy. i was flying in almost a week ahead of time to visit some family, so even if my other bag had gotten lost i think it would have worked out.
well,
good luck! |

| plan on having your luggage lost/delayed. i'd do what was suggested above. apparently, because of the size of fencing bags, they take them away from the "regular" luggage and screen them manually. because of this, my luggage was delayed a day coming back home a few weeks ago. |

| I can get my lame ( folded in a towel ), mask ( stuffed with shoes, body cords, and jacket ) into a carry-on-sized bag, and still have room for miscellany. The rest travels in a hard plastic golf case and is sedulously prayed for... |

If I arrive and then fence the next day I do pack everthing but my weapons in my carry on. If I have a day or more in between, I don't. Having to buy weapons is not much of a penalty because you can sell them to someone else or have them for future replacements.
I have had my fencing bag misplaced overnight on more than one occasion. But it has always caught up the next day, so far. |
