| No; negative marks are not evenly distributed. They're as badly abused, if not more so, than the green dots. Really. All it takes is a couple of vicious, vindictive people to pick their most-hated dozen targets, and the system goes totally out of whack.
Even if you don't like the obnoxiously long green chains under some (cough*epeeists) names, at least appreciate that they're positively skewed in a sense of goodwill. Don't let the system slide into meanness. |

Which means that it will mosly be the same all around. And if someone's targeted a little extra, maybe they should stop posting the stuff that gave them negative rep. I know of one troll (no names, of course) who now has three rep dots. Quote: |

(Wes, you might have redeemed yourself with the last rep you gave me).
If I'm gonna spend the time to read your comment, I want it to be worth my time.

You're assuming that the negative rep-giver is, by default, justified in his action and that the victim probably deserves to be dumped on. |

I'm saying that if the negative rep giver is not justified, no one person will be "dumped on" more than any other. Why would people randomly give you more negative rep than anyone else? |

If I'm gonna spend the time to read your comment, I want it to be worth my time. | True. But it still brings up the point that people use positive rep negatively as well. |

You could look sideways at the wrong guy on the street -- randomly chosen, of course -- and end up with a nutjob stalker who repeatedly throws eggs at your house because he thinks you deserve it for not using your car's turn signal.
Dude, it's a silly point, and I'm going to stop trying to explain with this message. I'll just say that I've seen it play out on decent folk, on- and off-line. Just because you can't imagine such focused aggression happening for any justified reason doesn't mean it doesn't happen. |

I'm just saying that negative rep won't put the best posters into the negatives. It didn't when we had it, and it won't if we change it. |

| Why do you think that the mods removed the negative rep ability in the first place? You must be remembering "before" differently than the rest of us... |

| Personally, I kinda liked negative rep.
It was funny seeing these little red dots for the most innocuous post. And then some people would really let loose. It was hilarious seeing how worked up some people get over an anonymous forum.
I mean the whole rep concept is like a high school election. A few people really try to use it to mean something, but the most part it's a useless popularity contest.

But now that removing negative rep never solved the original problem (annonymous verbal attacks), and we have a new problem (enormous amounts of rep), I don't think it's a bad idea to consider going back. |

| Or maybe we could just get rid of rep entirely. That's always been my preference. As Achilleus says, the whole concept is pretty silly. Now it's obvious it's been disruptive as well. If we want to make comments on someone's post, how about we just do it in a following post? Or send a PM. ( Radical idea, I know. ) |

Heck no it's entertaining when people put some thought into it.
It's boring when people just say nothing, or 'you suck.'
