| I keep forgetting to say.
This tournament was incredibly well run. I don't think things could have gone any smoother. (Well, the time between pools and DEs was a little long for my tastes, but still.) I thought it was well worth the money to have a really well laid-out venue, and a bout committee that was fast, and could run 3 or 5 or whatever events at once without nearly any delays at all. |

| I refrain from introducing myself to people as my fencing.net name, tho I've both had people introduce themselves to me similarly, and had other people introduce me to third parties by my screename. I suppose I might do it more often one if I cared, and two if I could come up with a consistent way to pronounce my screename without seeming foolish.

| That's called Cuban (dirty) fencing. You put up with it or you fight it. Looks like in the end Brendan prevailed, which is the only logical thing that could have happened.

Oh, and it *was* hot. Infernal, in fact. I never, ever want to fence in that kind of heat and humidity again. I could feel my body fat rendering off of me as I stood there - before ever actually fencing. Not that that would be a bad thing, normally, but it's hard to get motivated.
Good directing in my area (couple of wrong calls both ways, but much better than usual). Things moved along pretty well. Lots of really nice people around. I'm sometimes surprised at how many people I actually know out there now! And I didn't come in anywhere near DFL, which is always a treat.

| Well, NOBODY who hadn't already met me in person said hello. For heaven's sake, people, say hi!
I am somewhat recovered. I really did think I was going to pass out part of the time. My hands swelled up and turned red, and I saved a nice little mild asthma attack for right after my DE.

| I thought the event was terrific. My only question is why did it fall so late this year? It's terrible that the new ratings can't be used at Nationals!!!! |

| Traditionally it's the weekend prior to nationals. Only reason for it to be another weekend is if the gym space isn't available then. What's changed is the deadline for classification changes to be into the national office. Until this event (so including previous events this season) the deadline has been the Monday preceeding the start of the competition. With a deadline like that and a good, diligent, bout committee/division organization, results from the weekend prior to the national event can affect the seeding.

Push the deadline back a week and most organizers that know they need to get the results in "immediately" will manage to get the results reported in time for the classification updates to make it into the competition database. It creates a bit more flexibility for national office and tournament staff who are overloaded in the few days leading up to nationals.
That may or may not be the actual answer. I don't even know if the change was from the TC or from the national office staff. For a definitive answer one would first have to determine the source of the change and then inquire of the people who made it as to their rationale.

| I just got back from Boston (PdT, then ortientation for Brandeis, then helping my uncle move), and here's some stuff I noticed:
-Yes, the heat was the worst I had felt since Mr. Ma and it was the first time I sweated so much that I had to switch shirts in the middle of a competition.
-The competition had completely different fencers than last year. I'm pretty sure that there were no repeats of top 4 in men's foil.
-Here's who I fenced in order: Dorian Cohen, Mike Dote, Eliot Cohen, Alex Linkin. I have fenced all of these people many times before because they all are from New York. I was just a BIT disappointed to fence so many New York fencers after travelling that far.
It was fun, though, so I didn't care who I fenced. Favorite moments at the competition:
-Watching team Starfox win the team event (though what happened to Dorian later made it a mixed day)
-Getting the T-Shirt, only to be told by someone that it reminds them of 9/11
-Coming back to the competition while on my tour for orientation just in time to say goodbye to some people and hear Brendan Meyers announced as the winner. The other midyears know me better now as the "fencer boy" than Dan.

| It was so hot in that gym (near 100 degrees outside temp to begin with), the referees were specifically instructed to dress for the temperature. Those of us who didn't receive the memo in time (because we were already in transit), ended up getting penalized by the "FOC's" of the day. I actually got Yellow Carded and Red Carded by a certain "off-duty FOC" for making the fencers on his strip "drown in [my] sweat" because I was still in USFA-referee uniform.
For the second day, I was dressed VERY CASUALLY, and in doing so learned a very valuable lesson that helped me out a great deal at the Summer Nationals as I was going through the process of being evaluated for rating increase as well as establishing myself and earning the trust of not-so-local coaches and fencers. That is, if I am comfortable (and allow myself to be), then I make hell of a lot better calls, consistently! |

As for the T-shirt, I had NO IDEA about the resemblance of the picture until the Summer Nationals, when one of the parents from New England informed me that she lost a bet with her son ($10?) that anybody would wear that T-shirt at the Nationals. I was completely puzzled by the notion, until she hinted at me that the design might suggest something that wasn't intended, and for that reason she bet no one would wear it. I was wearing it, completely ignorant, so her son got $10. |

Not very nice | Lief often practices at the AC with the team, including with Brendan, and we are all drinking buddies. His style is very aggressive (and Brendan is not exactly a gentle fencer) though I have never witnessed him being intentionally brutal... so consider that it may have simply been an accident. |
