Semi-final - Zagunis (USA) vs Marzocca (ITA)
Check out the lead foot in image HT7O4565.
What happened to Tony Curtis's face? Looked like it was hit by a cement truck and it dumped the whole load on him. Hey isn't Neil Diamond headlining at the San Remo? Couldn't they get him to do the awards? Maybe Penn Gillette?

Wow.
I think I've found my favorite fencing picture ever.
The first picture in the WS gold medal team bout, HT7O5342
Tan vs Netchaeva. Pretty.

Look at the screen in the background.Originally Posted by whtouche
I thought the screen image was interesting. I checked with the video guys, and it's absolutely at the same moment. But it looks like her back foot is still on the piste -- I guess because of the angle. It goes to show you how important it is to stand in the right place to get the best perspective of the action.
Gorgeous photos! Was this taken with a film camera or with a digital?
Photo of the lunge is absolutely incredible. You should make that one a poster!
Age, certainly, and drink, probably.Originally Posted by edew

Meanwhile, look at those photos again. If you didn't know the person in those wonderful Vision masks, or at least their identities, could you have told who they were? I couldn't. But---wasn't that the whole rationale behind mandating them in the first place? So spectators could recognize the occupant?
A bit of misplaced plastic surgery too maybe? He looks a bit like an older version of Liza Manelli's ex-husband (can't remember his name, but his face looks plastic and his eyes brows have been lifted to high, they are virtually on the back of his head...Originally Posted by Inquartata

Boo
I heard that in the women's foil, someone had a foil go through a portion of the mask or something? Any truth to that claim? Maybe it was in saber? Dunno. Just heard an incomplete comment about that.

So the TV cameras could do close-ups...Originally Posted by Inquartata

I spoke with Matthew Porter, one of the armorers present at the Las Vegas WC. He said that in women's saber, one of the fencers had her weapon jammed in between the lexan mask and the frame, going through enough so that the bulb portion of the tip went past the edge of the lexan (but still stayed inside the mask, never endangering the fencer...oh-ho-ho, I'd say...). They had to stick a screw driver in there, twist it to expand the gap between the frame and the lexan and pull out the saber.Originally Posted by edew
Still, not a great showing for lexan masks.

Especially considering that, as you said, this was women's sabre - as opposed to a more powerful event such as men's épée where the visor is target.Originally Posted by edew
It would be interesting to know what brand the mask was, and what Roch had to say about it (IIRC, he was present during the competition?)
- Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial
Roch was probably down at the $5-$10 roulette tables.![]()

Rene was not at the competition.
Of course not! Why would he associate with his subjects? It just isn't done, you know. One does not socialize with inferiors...
Well, the visor WOULD be target in sabre if it conducted. Heck, maybe they'll make a conductive visor for epee that grounds out and kills that target area. Then everyone will have a dead spot in the middle of their mask.Originally Posted by Kat
