seen any colored fencing jackets in use?

Ignore the lame issue for a moment -- I'm interested in the fencing jacket itself. Have you seen anyone fencing in a non-white jacket? Regularly? At competitions? And is he (or she) any good?

Some of the Italian fencers - Trillini, Vezzali possibly and at least one of the men - used to have dark blue jackets/breeches. Can't seem to find any photos of them though

A couple of the (good) fencers in my country have had the panels on their breeches coloured. The guy had black panels (some liked it, I didn't) - http://www.scottishfencingteam.com (guy on the left of the photo - is only wearing the jacket and not the breeches). The girl had blue panels on one set of kit, then later, red panels on another set. Both looked pretty good (the blue was combined with a blue lame - http://www.leonpaul.com/news/team_s/...ue_stowell.htm - fencer on the right), but I believe that the second set wasn't colour-fast enough (and ended up "red and pink" instead of "red and white")...

I can't attach multiple photos to a posting, but I created an album in my Photo Gallery.

In this photo you can see Paolo Pizzo of Italy (currently ranked 152nd in ME according to the FIE website).

There are also photos of him fencing Vitali Zakharov (currently ranked 422nd in ME according to the FIE website). You can also see the Belarus National stripe on his breeches.

I've seen a uniform or two at USFA events similar to Pizzo's, but the breeches have blue and white panels rather than the solid blue.

I am one of those who gave it a try a few years back, when the rules changes to allow color on the limbs (not the awful pastel on the torso stuff). Triplette made a jacket with colored triangles from under my arm to about my elbow, one green and one gold (club colors) with a green color. Really subtle unless I raise my arms. I plan to do something more when I replace the jacket.

Our club bought some team jackets that were leftover from an order placed with triplette (I think a team in France). We got the surplus as club jackets pretty cheap. They had dark solid colored sleeves.

I hardly ever see color at competitions. Pity (sorry Inq).

Actually, I would like a jacket in dark red, almost maroon, even if it had to be "pastel." I'm even willing to do the dye-job myself.

The problems keeping me from trying: I'm leery of ending up with dye that doesn't lock into the material and runs into my skin when I sweat; the cost of ruining a jacket; and the possibility of it fading into Pepto-pink over time.

Might be less problematic with blue or green -- those colors don't seem so icky when they start to fade. I just don't want blue or green.

What competitions are you attending? Epee-only ones? The colored lames are pretty common at bigger events. Plus shoes, and warm-ups. That's plenty of color, without adding it to jackets ( or, gods forfend, knickers ).

Actually, it's not "plenty", it's "too much". Sorry, FF.

there was a young team of fencers at the NAC in april, that had black and white jackets and knickers. It looked very sharp. If you look at corwin duncans suit, its kinda blueish.

Yes, I used to have to wear a red jacket (although it looked pink) as a beginner.

I have seen many fencers use a novel item to spruce up and add color to their uniform. It especially helps to identify which club/salle/school the fencer belongs to. It also allows for a far greater range of artistic expression than simple colors. What they do is come up with a nifty design for their salle, send it to a fabric design house, the design company sends back a bunch of small fabric pieces with the design embroidered on them, the fencers buy these from the club (it is a good fund raiser) and attach them to their jackets on their off hand shoulder/arm. Armorers also can make a buck or two attaching these for the sewing disabled. Some companies even will put an iron on material on the back of the fabric to make it easier to attach. I think these are a really neat idea. I hope to see them used more often.

Another bit of color I have seen some fencers wear is often frowned upon by traditionalists like Mr. Epee. I am speaking of course of the bandana. If one has long hair, it even helps keep one's bangs out one's eyes! Fashion AND practicality all in one! There are even some places that will make you your own custom bandanas so you could put your salle logo on them much like the small fabric patches I mentioned previously.

There was one guy at last weekend's Sunshine State Games whose weapon arm had a black sleeve on an otherwise all white jacket. Not snazzy.

Some of the fencers from one of the colleges here in Tennessee wear completely dark blue jackets. They look fairly ugly though... Especially on one of the guys who has bright pink hair... ugh...

heh, thanks. That was me with the hair, although it's back to black now. But yeah, the blue jackets are ugly...glad I got myself a white one. I won't take offense to that though, you're Baylor..you don't know better.

Last time I was at Blade(last winter), they had these jackets that had red and blue stripes down the arms, and a red blade-catcher/neck thing(alternatively known as a collar). It looked....interesting. It wasn't BAD, but I didn't really think I liked it, either. I can't seem to find it on their site.

Just to throw in, I don't quite get what Mr Epee's issue with bandannas is. I wore one because it kept my gross, sweaty hair out of my eyes.
