Array Good luck to Mr Mills!
I wonder how we could initiate a similar movement. I realize that an earnest celebration or emotional release may deserve a bit of noise (especially in victory), but must there be rafter-rattling with every...single...touch? Or, in many instances, every single action regardless of the outcome? But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. -

Array Yes, let's remove the last semblance of passion from our sport. Just because a few abuse it doesn't mean that it should be curbed. RebelFencer's Awesome Quote of the Week:

Array Yes, let's remove the last semblance of dignity from our sport. "Passion" above all else, even if it's synonymous with "rude".
You chose a sport with a certain idiom. You can expect to be asked to fit yourself into that idiom, not invited to trash it and impose your own... -

Array I dunno, the grunting just doesn't seem as extreme as say screaming in fencing. -Sabresque

Array "Mills, who retires this summer after more than two decades in charge at the tournament, said the two single biggest complaints the All England Club gets in letters from Wimbledon spectators were about players grunting and spitting."
Eeeeewwwww!
At least fencers don't (tend to) spit... -

Array How could you stop people form screaming in fencing, card them for it. I do it occasionally but not after every touch.

If the fencer doing the screaming is doing it to be rude and obnoxious to his/her opponant that is one thing. If they are doing it as part of their fencing, deal with it.
Ya know, there are so many bad sportsmanship issues in fencing, coaches screaming at refs, the loss of civility between fencers, parents trying to do psych out other people's kids, a coach trying to psych out an 8 year old who was fencing a student in Y 10, screaming is nuthin. The back biting and gossip that goes on in meets in mind boggling and it is mostly in the Youth age groups.
If it helps the fencer, it is good,
