| Face plant While at junior sectionals lasy weekend i saw a friend of mine land one of the most incredible moves... on his face! He was backing down the strip and saw an opportunity. He "flunged" at his opponent, but the guy just used a distance parry, so he rdoubled it about 2 times, untill you just saw him break. He redoubled one last time, and fell right on his face while trying to land the attack. I wasn't even watching the bout, I just happned the turn around and I saw. One of the greatest things I have seen in my life. Afterwards when we asked him about it he just laughed and walked away.
Anyone have anyother stories such as this?

| Yesterday I was fencing a girl. She slammed her head (mask) right on mine. I almost fell down on the ground and she got a yellow card...

| A good friend of mine from Wisconsin was in a bout where for some strange reason, he kept falling down while trying finish his attacks.
Obviously, the director kept nullifying his valid hits because of his increasing contact with the floor.
I was standing right next to her daughter, who kept yelling... "Dad! Don't fall down!"... "Dad! Don't fall down!"
It was pretty funny. |

| I doubt I can explain this in any way that makes sense, but here goes:
Both right handed, opponent flesched, I bound down and outside, as she passed I turned with her and my weapon arm went behind my head to hit in the back/butt. It's a great move that I use quite often, but this time I got overzealous or something and in the process of turning, both feet came off the ground so that I was in the air, face-up about 2-3 feet off the ground and landed flat on my back. The referee, in an apologetic voice (I dunno why) said "Uh..sorry, but I have to umm..annul that touch" I just replied "Yeah, I'd hope so"

| My first and pretty much only, hard corps a corps occurred against one of the junior fencers from my club about six months ago. It was also among on of the few decent fleches I've managed in my so-called fencing career. Usually, I manage to divert to the side as I'm running past, but this time I just couldn't put on the breaks. I collided with him and I swear I had a bruise on my chin from contacting the top of his mask--since that's about where he came up to on me. He's a somewhat experienced youth fencer, so I guess he'll have to get used to that sort of thing, and I didn't do it on purpose, but I still felt awful. Of course it couldn't have happened in a bout with one of the adults, where the heighth situation in all but a few cases is reversed--the top of my head comes up to their chin. Then I would have laughed it off, but I have a hard time "beating on children" as it is. Anyway I got the yellow card, and I most hardily approved. Frankly, I would have red carded myself at least, even though the rules don't dictate that.

| SoCal men's team foil champs a couple of years ago.
Gascon vs Masque de Fer (Chaminade). For Gascon: Ken Chilton (lefty, about 5'4", REALLY fast). For MDF: Derek Snyder (rightie, 6'+, and faster than the average fighter jet)
Ken makes an attach and trips on Derek's front foot -- starts to fall. At this point, the gymnastics training he had prior to becoming a fencer comes back as he plants his unarmed hand down, does a full cartwheel, and comes back up in the en garde position.
Got a yellow card, but it was the most bizzare thing I've seen on the piste! |

| What's even better is Derek's father caught it on video...unfortunately, I never got a copy...otherwise it'd be posted on the divisional website! |

| Lets see... my best story of feeling dumb... so many for only such a short time fencing... I would have to say about 3 months ago durning our little class tournament, I was up agaist a pretty big guy. I'm 5'10 155lbs, but this guy was like 6'3 250 maybe? Big dude. Well it was me and him in the semi final round. He knew i was a bit better so he tried a totaly differ tactic then what i was used to when we practiced together in class. We was playing 98% defence, which is not his style at all, well i decided to run in close and try to go down on him. It figures, the one time he didn't step back like i was figuring he would. I over over stepped and slammed into his chest. well, since he out weighed me by 100 pounds or so, i was the one that flew backwards and ended up on my rearend. Needless to say, everybody got a good laugh. but hey, i won the match

| Last year at Pacific Coast Championships I was up against a young lady who was very fast on her attack, I tried to pull distance to reset but she was too quick for me so I started quick cross overs backward and leaned in for the stop cut to her arm. Being a sabre fencer, cross overs are not a common thing. Needless to say, my feet were not prepared for such abuse and I ended up on both heels and no balance. Went flying back ward onto my butt, nearly went heels over head but did manage to slide a good 4 feet before I stopped. Not my most graceful moment. But I did manage to land the stop cut before going down and the touch was valid. My coach just groaned and hid his face in shame.

| one of the bouts I was judging at my salle...
newbies are fencing trying to emulate the stronger fencers at our club. One ducks as a counterattack WAY premature, the other doesn't know what to do so he decides he'll just fleche into the other guy, who promptly angles his body so that he hip checks the incoming fencer. The attacker does a flip and lands on his back, and the one ducking grabs his sword with two hands and kind of brings it over his head to hit the other guy in the back, while facing forward.
this was one of the MOST confusing things I have ever seen in my life, I didn't know whether to call corps à corps, or falling, or going off the strip (since the guy fell way off the strip), or reversing shoulders on the guy who hipchecked. |
