| Weapon? (Foil)
Classification? (Class-i-fi-what? Oh, you mean "how good am I"? Bad.)
How many years have you been fencing? (8.5 months)
Do you take private lessons? (I wish, but alas... no)
Do you fence at a club, high school, college/university, other? (Club)
Left handed or Right handed? (Right)
Favorite thing about fencing: (How good it feels - the exhiliration.)
Least favorite thing about fencing: (Getting bonked in the head.)
Is there something you do special before a bout or during a tournament to get you prepped or good luck? If you do, what? (Try to settle the butterflies in my stomach. Set a realistic goal. Get sleep the night before, but don't oversleep. Remember that regardless of how I perform, I'm still going to have a spectacular time.)
What are you always happy about at the end of your fencing? (What I've improved on, new things I've learned, that good feeling of being really tired that only comes with working hard.)
What are you always least happy about at the end of fencing? (Trying to get out of bed the day after a tournament. )
Have you created your own move? (Not yet. I've done a bunch of weird stuff to try to get out of the way of something or to maneuver for a hit, but my coach usually catches me )
Have you ever bled? (Yep, three times - twice at tournaments, once at the club.)
Have you ever had a serious injury? (I've been quite lucky in this respect so far. No serious injuries due to fencing.)
Have you ever met a “special someone” where you fence? (Nope. Met her before I started fencing.)
Are you obsessed with fencing? (I think so... I'm not a fencing zealot or anything, but I sure do miss it when I'm not doing it.)
How are you obsessed with fencing? (I sure do miss it when I'm not doing it... when I see a fencing photo nowadays, I look at it and actually try to figure out what/how they're doing, as opposed to "wow" or "ouch".)
Have you ever gone to Nationals? (BWAHAHAHAHAAAARRrrrgh. Uh, no.)
Have you ever gone to the JO’s? (Junior Olympics) (I'd never qualify. That, and I'm too old.)
Have you ever been qualified to go any of the above? Which? (Well, I think anyone can show up at the Canadian nationals, so I'll make myself feel good and say "yes". Please correct me if I'm wrong.)
In you opinion, are you good at refereeing? (Nope. I like being a corner judge - I can keep yelling "ABSTAIN". All joking aside, I'm no good at refereeing, but it's something I do find interesting and try to do when I'm not actually bouting or practicing.)
Has fencing affected your life in a good way or bad way? Explain a little. (Good way - I'm healthier at 29 than I was at 15. I'm more flexible, I can tie my shoes without breaking a sweat, and fencing has made me realize that I'm capable of doing a lot more than I thought I could, thus bolstering my self-esteem. I'm really a new person. )
Final Question: Did you enjoy taking this quiz? (Depends - did I pass?)

| Weapon? Foil (Long ago) Epee (Now and forever) Classification? Yes How many years have you been fencing? 15+ Do you take private lessons? Not now, but had daily lessons for many years Do you fence at a club, high school, college/university, other? Club Left handed or Right handed? Right Favorite thing about fencing: Getting on strip and playing the game Least favorite thing about fencing: People who don't know their place in the sport. Often the worst offenders wear bandanas. :-) Is there something you do special before a bout or during a tournament to get you prepped or good luck? If you do, what? Outside of what I would consider normal mental focus exercises, If I'm not feeling good, get confused by my fencing, or just feel nervous about an upcoming opponent, I'll find someone, and tell them that I love fencing, even if I don't know them. It works for me, and helps me remember why I'm there in the first place. What are you always happy about at the end of your fencing? Beer What are you always least happy about at the end of fencing? Usually I'm sad that there aren't more quality bouts available outside of a few major competitions.... That and the fact that so many people skip out on the chance to watch the finals. People complain that fencing isn't popular, but then they don't even watch it themselves. Have you created your own move? There is nothing new under the sun, but I am partial to 6 coupes to the hand and 6 filo actions. Have you ever bled? Yes Have you ever had a serious injury? Yes Have you ever met a “special someone” where you fence? Yes, several when I was younger, but I will never date a fencer. Fencing is my thing. It's an uneven yoke, and if they decide to quit fencing then the relationship is pretty much over. I feel it's a hassle... plus fencing is a small world. Are you obsessed with fencing? Obsession would be a bad thing, but it's a big part of my life. Have you ever gone to Nationals? Yes Have you ever gone to the JO’s? (Junior Olympics) Yes Have you ever been qualified to go any of the above? Which? Yes In you opinion, are you good at refereeing?Yes, and most people agree Has fencing affected your life in a good way or bad way? Explain a little. It's a little unfair to classify things as good and bad. Fencing has given me a ton, but the opportunity costs are huge as well. I'm happy, so I'll say Good.

| Weapon? – Mostly foil, trying very hard to improve at epee. Probably end up in epee full-time eventually. Once I get those wrist shots down pat.
Classification? – None. I'm so pathetic and long in the tooth, I probably never will, but hope springs eternal.
How many years have you been fencing? - 2.5 (but really only serious for 6 months).
Do you take private lessons? – When I can afford it. And sometimes when I can’t.
Do you fence at a club, high school, college/university, other? - Clubs - one local community club for fun, one serious salle for serious fencing.
Left handed or Right handed? - Right
Favorite thing about fencing – Adrenaline rushes and that wonderful feeling of stabbing someone with a meter of steel. Aggression Management 101. And great people!
Least favorite thing about fencing – sweating profusely in all those layers. And the rising costs of equipment and lessons. And that I can only do it twice a week. And I look terrible in white.
Is there something you do special before a bout or during a tournament to get you prepped or good luck? If you do, what? – Listen to one or two specific songs. They run through my head while I'm fencing, too.
What are you always happy about at the end of your fencing? – Hopefully that I did my best, even if I didn’t win. And it’s usually followed by great sex.
What are you always least happy about at the end of fencing? – That it’s the end of fencing! And that feeling that “I should have OWNED that guy…”
Have you created your own move? – Not unless you count the times I’ve wiped out by accident. I've made some spectacular rolls on the strip.
Have you ever bled? – Yep, many times. The most recent finally healed after 2 weeks.
Have you ever had a serious injury? – Not yet.
Have you ever met a “special someone” where you fence? – Well, yes, but he’s married… But seriously, I’m not in the market for that. And I would never date a fencer. As Mr. Epee said, it's MY thing.
Are you obsessed with fencing? – Absolutely.
How are you obsessed with fencing? – What, you want examples? I sometimes think about fencing during, er, activities that should not be mentioned in a PG-13 forum.
Have you ever gone to Nationals? No. I'm not good.
Have you ever gone to the JO’s? (Junior Olympics) No. I'm way too old.
Have you ever been qualified to go any of the above? Which? No
In you opinion, are you good at refereeing? No, I don’t think so – but I’m trying to improve that. I can usually follow the actions with my mind, but articulating them isn't as fluid as it might be.
Has fencing affected your life in a good way or bad way? Explain a little. – Very good ways. Improved attitude, serious aggression management (sensing a theme?), wonderful exercise, mental focus, poise, balance, reflex speed, coordination, competition, camaraderie, legality of hitting people with a meter of steel…
Final Question: Did you enjoy taking this survey? Umm, yes?

| Weapon? Competed, refereed and coached in all three over the years, and now focus on coaching sabre and refereeing. Primary competition weapon was sabre.
Classification? USFCA Moniteur in all threee weapons, FOC ratings of 5 in all three weapons (working on the 4s), was at one time rated E epee, D foil and C sabre. Lost them due to inactivity, as I don't compete any more.
How many years have you been fencing? 11
Do you take private lessons? Not any more, but I give them
Do you fence at a club, high school, college/university, other? My own club.
Left handed or Right handed? Right dominant, but working on giving lefty lessons.
Favorite thing about fencing: the comradre with good people and friends
Least favorite thing about fencing: politics
Is there something you do special before a bout or during a tournament to get you prepped or good luck? If you do, what? I used to listen to Metalica and Guns-N-Roses.
What are you always happy about at the end of your fencing? Occationally I bout with my students and I'm always happy that I can still pull of the occational "slimy move."
What are you always least happy about at the end of fencing? That I have to resort to "slimy moves" in order to score touches cause my knees are shot!
Have you created your own move? I've a couple of tactical programs that I put together for my students. Not original ones, by any stretch of the imagination, but I did figure out on my own how to teach and communcate them.
Have you ever bled? From fencing? Yes. Whipover hit to the mask.
Have you ever had a serious injury? Not from fencing.
Have you ever met a “special someone” where you fence? Neve had a SO who was a fencer, but had several good friends.
Are you obsessed with fencing? My wife says yes!
How are you obsessed with fencing? Spending countless weekends refereeing, opening my own club...
Have you ever gone to Nationals? Numerous times as a competitor and referee.
Have you ever gone to the JO’s? (Junior Olympics) Once as a competitor and a couple of times as a referee.
Have you ever been qualified to go any of the above? Which? Yes, both.
In you opinion, are you good at refereeing? I'd consider myself one of the better referees in my region (at least one of the hardest working), and I was decent enough to be allowed to referee DivI events this year in all three weapons I've done final 8 bouts in Junior ME and final 4 in Cadet WE, round of 16 bouts in Junior WF, and worked in the first round of DE's in DivI Sabre and to the round of 32 in Junior WS. Nothing earthshattering yet, but solid enough that I'm happy with my overall level of development so far and hope to continue at the same or better pace.
Has fencing affected your life in a good way or bad way? Explain a little. Good way. I've met many good friends, had some wonderful experiences and found a community of people that I can give back to.
Final Question: Did you enjoy taking this survey? It was fun! |

Fencing is the one sport that I've stuck to no matter what. Even though I know my limitations, I'm very passionate about it and I never thought that I could be so passionate about a sport other than soccer or about anything else than psychology. Most importantly, I've met a lot of great people, made great friends for life, have learned/discovered many things about life/people/myself through it.
Final Question: Did you enjoy taking this survey? Yes
