    The poll IS flawerd.

I don't get it, is this sort of SmokeyTheCat263 saying people SHOULDN'T talk about a particular aspect of fencing?

I guess maybe she doesn't approve of your socratic approach, grasshopper?

Poll is flawed. No option to say, "I don't care, I fence sabre or epee."

Why sabre? Because you don't take heads with the point.

This poll is a funny carry over from another thread... where Grasshopper was trying to "solve" and aspect of fencing.

His subject would be the same as trying to argue which pitch is better in baseball, or what play is the best in football. There is no exact answer, because the answer is dependent on the situation. That's the beauty of sports!
    Take your time. Read carefully.

I don't knw what the best attacking speed is, but I do know that if you are fencing someone who can go backwards faster than you can go forwards, AND change tempo while they are doing it--you're screwed.

Winning isn't everything, it just lets you fence longer.

The proper speed for a foil attack is a gazillion miles an hour.

    Prove me wrong.
Just because you have the right, that doesn't mean it is right.

    A couple things.

    1) You need a university degree in quantum quadratics to understand the true attacking speed of foil... double so if you're using countertime. Unless you're Sam Cross, I wouldn't even bother to think about it. Itt'l blow your mind.

    2) I think that a proper substitute for this arcane knowledge of fencing is practicing the sport.

3)This is getting a bit old FOTH. Gav

    I rest my case.

    5) This poll is flawed

I voted "as fast as you can", but that's with the condition that you are still able to disengage and not get caught in prep. For me, the fastest I can go without breaking one of those, against an opponent about my level, is a little faster than their retreating speed.

LoL I thought I'd be one of the few who votes "Shut up and go fence!" but apparently not... O__O

    To everyone:

The poll was meant to be satirical. I am well aware that none of the options accurately represent how to execute a sucessful foil attack. In that sense...yes...the poll is flawed. However, I am pleased to see so many votes for the "Shut up and go fence!" option.

c/2 is a good answer but you gotta watch out for relativistic effects

There is no defined speed. You need to be able to vary your tempo. Granted, the greater your maximum attack speed, the more variation in tempo you can introduce, but that's not really an answer to your question.

    I Rock!!!

I was right. Everybody said shut up and fence. One poor bloke suggested the slow lunge. It must be bloody lonely there but when he comes at me I'll know what to expect. My appologies if you are a woman.
