| sabre handle Hi everyone,
I have really small hands so my coach suggested a small sabre handle instead of the regular ones, but I haven't been able to find a single store that carries them. Does anyone know where I could find them? Thanks a lot. |

| i'm fairly sure that:
1) they only make one size
2) hand size has nothing to do with how your hand will fit on a sabre grip |

| the way to make a small sabre grip is to get one of the rubber ones, and cut it to size.

| There are sabre grips that are shorter than others, see Sword Master's site. But your coach may be referring not to length, but to diameter. Some leather wrapped grips are thinner than the rubber grips and the thinner grip may be easier for a small hand to hold. Ask your coach what it is he or she is recommending.

Because given how quickly the rubber wears out, I think that's what I'm using right now. |

| Yes but the handle will not be shot blasted. We are working on a better range of rubber handles which should be out in the fall and will not wear as fgast as the present ones. |

I liked the feel of your rubber handle, but when the rubber started to wear, it really snowballed. |

| Of course you can ask some of the older sabreurs and see if they have the old wood sabre handles... they may be easier to trim down in size to fit your small hands.
OTOH, you can always do some exercises to strengthen you hand.

| Or if you're so inclined make your own. Get a wooden dowel, heat up the tang of an old broken blade or similar steel object, burn a hole through the dowel lengthwise ( it will probably take several applications ), carve the wood to suit your hand, and then coat in Shoe Goo ( the rubber-in-a-tube sold in sporting goods stores and elsewhere for repairing athletic shoe soles ). I have made several grips this way. |

| Does heating the tangs make them more prone to break as a change of the temper?

| It does affect the temper, which is why I say use an old broken blade instead of a good one. All tangs are pretty much the same size, so there's no need to use the good blade that's going into the grip for fencing.
( Actually, what you're doing is annealing the steel, making it softer, so it should be less likely to break...but it'll bend more easily, so you don't want a working blade to do that. )
If you burn the hole too large, you can just insert wood splinters as shims into the gaps as you mount the blade.
