Scotchguarding a Lame lining.

I recently purchased an Uhlman foil Lame and my coach has recommended that I use scotchguard on the lining to prevent the lame from grounding to me when I am perspiring excessively. What are the general opinions about this out there? I'm curious to find out if this is necessary or not. The lame was quite an investment for me and I intend to be cautious about what I do with it. Thanks!

I do this for all of my lames as it helps to keep sweat from your jacket from getting into the lame and starting the corrosion process.

Things to note:
  • It will make you the slightest bit hotter as the lining won't breathe as much
  • Make sure that you DO NOT get any of the Scothguard on the lame material as it will no longer conduct if you do!

Cheers,
Craig

A brandname for a 3M product. http://www.scotchgard.com

Has been expanded to refer to a line of 3M products that use Scotchgard protectant. Designed to prevent stains in things like couches and carpet by repelling the liquid(s) spilled on them.

Not too sure about this issue of conductivity. I sweat profusely, enough to saturate the collar on a lame pretty effectively in an evening's fencing, but I've never been aware of off-target hits registering as on-target, even in an Infinity lame with very open sport mesh lining. I've taken hits to the mask that have register on-target because the bib's wet, and I suspect the path of conductance is from mask to me, from me through collar to lame (rather than mask direct to lame, which is also possible), but that's happened in the Infinity lame, in regular lames and in some hellish lames we used to use with an impermeable plastic lining. So unless you can Scotchgard the saturation zone around the neck - which is likely illegal - then I suspect there's very little to be gained in terms of preventing erroneous on-targets.

On the other hand, the areas that tend to die first - for me, at least - are the collar and under the bib, so if you can reduce sweat damage there by Scotchgarding, you may extend the life of the lame.

All LP lames have a waterproof lining and there is no need to treat them with anything. It is a requirement in the rules that the lining is not permeable.
